Nina felt a bit bewildered by this. “I’m not sure.”
Everything she knew felt incredible. Seth had already disappeared into the rushing waterfall, and there was no sign of him. They had no choice but to return the way they came.
The lab was in disarray, but it had not changed much. Nash thought about what was inside and hesitated. “Maybe you shouldn’t go in.”
“Why not?” Nina asked. “You were just asking me about the mechanisms inside. I need to go in to understand.”
Nash frowned slightly. “The things inside the lab are not easy to look at.”
“So that’s what you’re worried about,” Nina realized. “It’s okay. I’ve heard about so many unbelievable things already. Nothing can scare me now.”
She reassured Nash, showing her inner strength.
As they walked in, she was still shocked by the cruel extent of the lab’s contents. There were human organs used for some kind of experiments and various deformed animals from failed experiments. Caged animals were screaming, with one monkey having self-harmed to the point of bleeding fingers. The smell was a mix of blood and chemicals, nauseating.
“Wilfred,” Nina saw Wilfred standing in the center, holding a test tube with gloved hands.
Wilfred turned, relieved to see she was okay. He said, “I’m glad you’re safe. But there’s bad news. The test tubes here aren’t the real deal. They’re probably fakes.” “Fakes?” Nash’s expression turned serious. “That old fox!”
Nash explained, “Seth’s lab doesn’t have the real stuff here but it can’t be far. It must be nearby.”
“The tunnel,” they realized simultaneously.
With its complex mechanisms, the tunnel was the perfect hiding place.
Nina looked silently at the spot where Seth had escaped and instinctively walked over, pressing a switch. The ground immediately sank, revealing a set of stairs. Without thinking, Nina started to go down, but Nash grabbed her hand.
She looked back at him, confused. “Didn’t it just open?”
Nash replied, “You shouldn’t go first.”
He pulled her back, positioning himself in front of her to protect her from any danger. Seeing this, Nina decided to listen to him. James, worried about Nash’s safety, suggested, “Captain, let me go first.”
They wanted to protect Nash too.
Nash looked at them coldly, saying, “If a simple tunnel stops us, how will we handle bigger threats in the future?”
James did not insist further. Nash tightly held Nina’s hand as they slowly descended the stairs, leading her down.
Nervous, Nina gripped his hand tightly, ignoring their strained relationship for the moment. They worked together, moving forward.
The path was dark, and the initial team that chased Seth had stopped here, unable to see and afraid to make a move.
Every step Nina took felt like a race against her fears, the dark environment suffocating. Her heart trembled with each step.
“It will be okay,” Nash reassured her gently. “We’re almost through.”
His encouragement helped calm Nina’s nerves until she noticed the sound of their footsteps suddenly becoming hollow. She immediately became alert and warned, “Stop!” Nash immediately halted.
