Nash replied softly, “Once the baby is born, you’ll have gone through so much. I don’t want you to endure that again.”
He had learned about the process of childbirth. Carrying a baby for ten months, with the child growing each day, he knew it became increasingly uncomfortable for her.
It was a tough journey, and whether it was a natural birth or a C-section, women had to go through a painful process. He couldn’t bear the thought of her suffering through it more than once.
Nina said, “Before I got pregnant, I thought the same, that having a baby would be tough. But after becoming pregnant, it feels worth it, more of a happiness.”
She rubbed her belly and continued, “Sometimes he moves, and it feels like he’s responding to me. It makes me feel even more connected to him.”
“Really?” Nash’s interest was piqued. He knelt down and pressed his ear to her belly. “Let me listen.”
He wanted to feel it too. As a first-time father, he was both nervous and excited.
“You seem to be really looking forward to it,” Nina said.
“Yes, I am,” Nash replied. “Very much.”
Nina recalled something he had said when he was drunk and teased, “I remember you once said that it wouldn’t matter if the baby wasn’t yours. You even offered to raise someone else’s child.” Nash had initially struggled with his feelings for Nina and had considered ending the pregnancy. But seeing how much it would hurt her, he couldn’t go through with it.
That must be love, he thought. It made everything else seem unimportant. Even if the child weren’t his, he would accept it. As long as Nina was with him, he could accept everything about her.
“Did I say that?” Nash laughed. “I guess you shouldn’t talk too much when you’re drunk, or you’ll end up spilling everything.”
“Well, now I know. To be honest, I was a bit surprised. I thought you wouldn’t like the baby and would want me to get rid of it. Later, when you found out, I was so nervous. But now, I have no worries. This baby is yours,” Nina said sincerely, hoping he would believe her. “I’ve only ever been with you.”

“I know,” Nash said, his eyes soft. “I know now. You’ve told me before, and I believe you, Nina. After everything we’ve been through, I’ll believe anything you say. I just regret not being a good husband or a good father.”
“You can make it up to me,” Nina said. “There’s still time.”
Nash looked at her with loving eyes.
He wanted to spend his life with her, free from hurt, living peaceful and happy days.
He didn’t know how much time he had left, but as long as he was clear-headed, he would make sure Nina was happy.
