“Yeah.” Nash replied.
Nina was stunned for a few seconds. She had not fully processed the information.
The hero she had always looked up to, Zac, had turned out to be a figment of her imagination.
Did that mean her relationship with Nash was based on her imagination?
She had followed in the footsteps of a hero only to be told that it was all due to a mix-up in her memories. It was hard for her to accept.
It felt like her belief was slowly crumbling. Even though she had doubted it before, she didn’t want to shatter this beautiful illusion.
Staring at Nash, she felt a deep-seated rejection and denial. “No way,” Nina insisted. “Impossible! How could my memories be wrong? I remember it clearly!”
Seeing her struggle to accept the truth, Nash tried to comfort her softly. “Even if it wasn’t true, it doesn’t matter. Fate brought us together, and that’s what counts. Don’t dwell on it.”
Nina couldn’t hear his words. If this wasn’t real, then what was?
What had she been holding onto for all these years?
Was it all just her imagination?
“I was the only one who survived the kidnapping. You saved me, and you got hurt. I remember it clearly. Everyone knows it. Ask them! Principal Wallace knows, and my parents know. Why are you telling me it’s all fake? It can’t be…” Nina’s eyes were vacant as she tried to explain.
Nash pulled her into his arms and gently patted her shoulder. “I know, I understand.”
This was how their fates were intertwined. He did not want to shatter her dream so easily. Yet, he feared that if she clung to this dream forever, she would miss out on the real him.
Leaning against his shoulder, Nina struggled to understand. Why were her memories so mixed up?
If Zac didn’t exist, why did she fall for Nash? It was too absurd to believe.
Nina couldn’t process it all at once. She felt there had to be more to her connection with Nash. If the kidnapping wasn’t real, why did she remember Nash saving her?
It explained why Nash had no reaction to the story. Everything started to make sense. She realized she had been living in a dream, somewhat obsessively.
The disappointment settled in. These memories were the foundation of her love for Nash.
In the end, it was all for nothing. Just a figment of her imagination.
Her initial hopes for Nash, weren’t they all just her wishful thinking?
She had experienced unrequited love before, but now it felt like all the emotions and efforts she invested had only burdened him. Feeling Nash’s warmth, Nina’s eyes were filled with sorrow. “When did you find out?” she asked.
“I discovered it when I was investigating Zac,” Nash replied honestly. “At first, I had suspicions. Later, I had it confirmed.” Nina let out a bitter laugh. “I suddenly feel so foolish.”
“I won’t let you think that way,” Nash said, frowning. “There’s nothing foolish about it. I’m still here with you, aren’t I?”
Nina was stubborn, shaking her head. “But I got it all wrong. If it weren’t for the memory mix-up, I wouldn’t be with you. I wouldn’t have caused you so much trouble. It was all just my imagination…”
“Don’t say that!” Nash interrupted her firmly, lifting her face to look into her eyes with deep sincerity.
“I’m grateful you have memories of me. I didn’t understand my grandfather’s arrangements at first, but now I do. Nina, you are the greatest gift life has given me. In my twenty-something years, you are my only source of joy. Because of you, my life is complete. Thank you for being in my life.”
