She stopped in her tracks, her face turning pale as she looked back at her in shock. “What did you say?”
She tightly gripped Lucy’s hand, thinking she must have misheard.
How could she have known Miranda in high school? According to her previous memories, she should have only known about Miranda when she started secretly liking Nash. Given her personality, there was no way she would have hung out with Miranda. They were rivals in love!
Now that she knew she did not meet Nash in middle school, how could she have known Miranda? It was too unbelievable. She suddenly felt like all her memories were a lie! Seeing Nina’s expression change dramatically, Lucy was taken aback, thinking she had said something wrong. “Nina… Did I say something wrong? Why are you reacting like this?”
Nina tried to calm her expression but still gripped Lucy’s hand tightly. “No, it’s not that. Did I really tell you that I knew a girl named Miranda? Are you sure?”
She looked to Lucy for an answer.
Lucy, afraid she might have remembered incorrectly, glanced at Nina’s anxious face and didn’t dare to be careless. She recalled their past conversations and nodded stiffly. “Yes, I’m sure. You said you met a girl, and her family situation was poor. You would occasionally help her out. I thought you two were close and still in touch.”
Hearing this, Nina’s pupils contracted in fear.
She had crossed paths with Miranda before, yet had no memory of it, while Miranda had been lurking around her all this time. Slowly releasing Lucy’s hand, Nina took a few shaky steps back.
“Nina, are you okay?” Lucy asked, concerned.
“I’m fine. You don’t need to worry,” Nina replied.
“What else do you remember?”
Nina looked at Lucy, desperate to uncover more about her fragmented past.
“We mostly talked about school, hobbies, nothing special. I just thought you and Miranda stayed in touch,” Lucy said.
Nina continued, “I didn’t interact much with Miranda back then, did I?”
Lucy thought for a moment. “You only mentioned her once and never brought her up again. So, I guess you didn’t interact much.”
That implied Miranda had intentionally approached her. Was it possible that Miranda had tricked her into joining the organization?
At such a young age, Nina wouldn’t have been wise to such schemes. Miranda might have played the victim, and Nina, feeling sorry for her, fell for it, offering her kindness. Lucy even said she had helped Miranda out. This realization hit Nina hard, making her question how much she had been manipulated.
Lucy noticed Nina struggling to recall these old memories. After all, it had been a long time. If Nina barely remembered her, how could she recall such details?
She remembered because Nina sat next to her, and with Miranda becoming a celebrity, these memories had surfaced.
After a while, Nina composed herself. “Lucy, it was nice seeing you today, but I’m still in the hospital. Let’s have dinner another day.”
“Sure,” Lucy said with a smile before leaving.
Yvonne, who had been quietly observing, spoke up after Lucy left. “Nina, did you really know Miranda that early?”
“I don’t remember,” Nina replied. “If we had contact that early, she’s even scarier than I thought.”
She realized she had been unaware of the wolf in sheep’s clothing manipulating her all this time.
Yvonne said, “You need to think carefully about this. Over the years, how much have you suffered because of her? These losses weren’t for nothing!”
