Jamie had been caring for Mrs. Lucas in the hospital for several days.
Mrs. Lucas watched Jamie closely and couldn’t help but sigh. “I never realized before…”
Sensing another trip down memory lane, Jamie interrupted with a warm smile. “Mom, let’s not dwell on the past, okay? What’s important is that you’re getting better now.” “Alright, alright, I won’t bring it up,” Mrs. Lucas said with a nod, her eyes glistening as she sipped her warm soup. She couldn’t deny how much brighter life had become. Around noon, Ben stopped by. Seeing his wife and mother enjoying each other’s company brought a sense of relief to him.
“Well, of course,” Mrs. Lucas said with a proud grin. “My daughter-in-law is like a second daughter to me.”
Jamie glanced at Ben and smiled. “Don’t worry, Mom’s recovering well. Just give her a few more days, and she’ll be good as new. I’ve got everything under control.” “I know you do.” Ben’s gaze softened with concern. “Just don’t overwork yourself.”
Before Jamie could respond, a familiar voice echoed from the doorway. “How’s Mrs. Lucas doing today?”
It was Mrs. Hughes, a socialite staying in the VIP suite next door. The floor only had a handful of rooms, so Mrs. Hughes often stopped by for a chat.
“Mrs. Hughes, come in and sit!” Mrs. Lucas greeted her warmly.
“Oh, I hope I’m not interrupting. Is that your son?” Mrs. Hughes said as she stepped in, her eyes lingering on Ben with a spark of interest.
“Yes, this is my son,” Mrs. Lucas replied, her pride evident.
“My, he’s so handsome. He looks like a movie star! Have we met before?” Mrs. Hughes asked, eyeing Ben curiously.
Mrs. Lucas beamed. “You might’ve seen him in a magazine. My son has been featured a few times for his work.”
“Oh, of course! You’re *the* Ben Lucas, the famous attorney. I remember now-what a remarkable young man!” Mrs. Hughes exclaimed, her admiration growing. “Thank you, Mrs. Hughes,” Ben replied politely.
Jamie rose to her feet. “I’ll walk him out.”
Mrs. Lucas, sensing the couple wanted a moment alone, simply waved them off with a knowing smile.
Once outside, Ben pulled Jamie into a quick hug. “Thank you for everything, honey.”
“Alright, enough with the mushiness,” Jamie said with a light push.
Ben looked at Jamie with a seriousness that caught her off guard. “Now that life has settled down, have you ever thought about pursuing the dreams you didn’t get to finish?” Jamie paused, his words stirring something deep inside her. The upheavals in her life had crushed those aspirations long ago, snuffing them out before they had a chance to bloom.
For years, she had dreamed of
holding the scales of justice,
stepping into a courtroom, and captivating everyone with her
brilliant arguments. The thought of
standing tall and debating with
conviction had once fueled her spirit.
But time had passed too quickly, and life had thrown so many obstacles her way. Now, she wasn’t sure if she still had the fire, the courage, or even the ambition she once carried so fiercely.
Ben held her gaze, unwavering. “If you want to try, I’ll support you every step of the way.”
Jamie smiled. “Let’s talk about it another time. You should get back to work.”
Ben nodded but left knowing he had planted a seed.
When Jamie returned, she found Mrs. Lucas and Mrs. Hughes deep in conversation.
Peeling an orange, Mrs. Hughes smiled slyly. “So, what’s the story with your daughter-in-law?”
“Oh, nothing special. She’s someone my son loved since his youth. After years of ups and downs, they finally found their way back to each other,” Mrs. Lucas replied, her tone full of warmth.
