Just as Ava was about to cause a scene, the sound of steady footsteps filled the room. Wilfred strode in, his white coat enhancing his composed, almost ethereal aura.
Ava shot Karina a glare, silently committing her to memory, then begrudgingly found another seat.
Wilfred’s gaze swept across the room, pausing ever so briefly on Karina before moving on. She wasn’t sure if it was real or just her imagination.
“Today, we’ll discuss cellular structures. I’ll start with an example from my doctoral thesis,” Wilfred announced, adjusting the projector.
To Karina’s surprise, he was an exceptional lecturer-clear, engaging, and far more comprehensible than many university professors. She listened intently, taking meticulous notes.
Yvette peeked over at Karina’s notebook, wide-eyed at the densely packed writing. “Karina, when you eventually get promoted, land a big raise, or go for your doctorate, I promise I won’t be jealous. Truly.” Karina chuckled. “If you need these notes, I can lend them to you.”
“Never mind, I’m fine where I am,” Yvette said with a dismissive wave, knowing her own limits and choosing to decline Karina’s offer.
After the lecture ended, Karina still felt a lingering sense of wanting to learn more. Just as she was packing up, a nurse she didn’t know very well approached her.
“Dr. Norman, can I borrow your notes?” the nurse asked hesitantly.
Karina looked puzzled. “You’re a nurse, aren’t you? Why do you need these notes?”
She wondered if nursing exams had become this advanced, or if she was just out of touch with the profession.
The nurse’s eyes flickered nervously, unable to hold Karina’s gaze. “Please, Dr. Norman. Just for a little while. I promise I’ll return them soon.”
Karina hesitated for a moment but eventually gave in. “Fine, if you won’t explain, I’ll let it slide. But remember to return them soon. They’re really important to me.”
“I will! Thank you!” The nurse’s eyes darted away quickly, guilt flashing briefly, but Karina didn’t notice.
After Karina left, the nurse made her way to Ava. She handed over the notebook without hesitation.
Ava flipped through the pages, sneering. With a quick motion, she ripped out several pages, crumpled them into a ball, and tossed them into a nearby trash bin.
Watching the now mutilated notebook, Ava felt the tension in her chest ease slightly. The small act of destruction was oddly satisfying.
“Well done,” she said to the nurse, handing her a card. “This is yours.”
The nurse’s face lit up as she accepted the card-the very same card Karina had refused earlier.
By the afternoon, Karina grew
restless when her notes hadn’t been returned. She started searching for the nurse, but the woman was nowhere to be found.
Yvette, noticing Karina’s distress, offered, “Let me help you. Two sets of eyes are better than one.”
“Thanks,” Karina replied, and the two began scouring the hospital.
Eventually, they found the nurse hiding in a restroom stall. Karina pulled her out, noticing she hadn’t been doing anything-just hiding.
“Hey, I’ve been looking for you everywhere! Where are my notes?” Karina asked, her voice a mix of worry and irritation.
The nurse stammered, unable to form coherent words.
A sinking feeling crept over Karina. “What happened to my notes? You promised to return them. Where are they?”
Finally, under Karina’s relentless questioning, the nurse confessed, mumbling that the notes had been accidentally ruined. Boom!
Karina felt as though a bolt of
lightning had struck her. The words hit her like a ton of bricks, and her knees nearly buckled under her. She swayed slightly, struggling to steady herself as the realization sank in.
