Chapter 1814

Wilfred ended up eating two full bowls without realizing it.
Only when he couldn’t take another bite did he put his spoon down and wipe his mouth. “The porridge is well made,” he remarked.
The housekeeper chuckled. “It’s all thanks to Miss Karina’s idea. And to think I’m a certified nutritionist, but I didn’t come up with something like this. It’s a good thing she was here today!”
Karina smiled sheepishly. “It’s just something I learned growing up in a regular household. We didn’t have much, and when I didn’t have an appetite as a kid, I’d make this porridge for myself. I’d always end up eating a lot. So, I figured it might work this time too. I’m glad it turned out well.”
The housekeeper insisted she was being modest, showering Karina with praise.
Wilfred, watching the simple yet thoughtful meal on the table, felt a rare warmth in his chest. It might not compare to a five-star meal, but knowing that every bite was made with care, specifically for him, made it more satisfying than anything else. “Thank you,” Wilfred said, his voice sincere.
Karina blinked, caught off guard for a moment, before waving it off. “I just did a small thing. It’s nothing to thank me for.”
In her mind, everything she had done still paled in comparison to how much Wilfred had helped her.
But Wilfred took this moment to heart. Though he said nothing more, he had already decided that he would do everything in his power to help her pass her upcoming exams.
Two days later, Wilfred had recovered and prepared to return to Birkham, where his work awaited.
Before leaving, he handed Karina a thick notebook. “These are my medical notes from over the years. They contain some of my personal insights. Take your time going through them.”
He said it so casually, as though the notebook was nothing more than a scrap of paper.
Karina stared at the notebook, stunned, its weight suddenly feeling immense in her hands. “This is far too important. I can’t accept it!”
She tried to return it, but Wilfred’s
firm voice stopped her. “Was your plan to take the graduate exams just an offhand comment? If not, then keep it. What’s in here can help you.”
“But…”
Seeing her hesitation, his expression softened as he continued, “I’ve promised to write you a
recommendation letter. Consider me half your mentor now. Since I’ll be in Birkham and can’t guide you in person, this is the best I can do.”
Karina felt a wave of emotion wash over her. Looking at Wilfred’s earnest face, she finally nodded. “I won’t let you down.”
After seeing him off at the airport,
Karina threw herself into her studies
with renewed determination. She
almost always had his notebook
nearby, studying its contents
whenever she could.
As the exam date drew near, Karina felt prepared, her confidence bolstered by the wealth of knowledge she had absorbed.
But before the exams arrived, an unexpected visitor sought her out.
“Karina, someone’s here to see you,” Yvette hurriedly announced, bursting into the room.
Karina raised an eyebrow. “A patient?”
Yvette shook her head quickly, too out of breath to answer properly.
Karina patted her back, trying to calm her. “Take your time. Deep breaths.”
Finally, Yvette managed to gasp out, “You… need to come outside. It’s… it’s Harley! He said Professor Zeller wants to see you!”
Karina froze in shock. It took her a moment to process what Yvette had said before a wave of nervousness crept over her.
