“So, Professor Zeller,” she began calmly, though her nails were already digging into her palms, leaving crescent-shaped imprints. “Why exactly did you call me here? I have responsibilities back at the hospital, and I’d prefer not to waste time.” Professor Zeller raised an eyebrow, his lips curling into an amused smirk. “You’re quite fond of your current job, aren’t you?”
“Yes, I am.” Karina’s voice was steady, though her body was tense. She couldn’t afford to offend him—not someone with his influence.
Zeller studied her in silence for a moment, then tilted his head with a thoughtful frown. “There’s something familiar about you… but I can’t quite place it.”
Karina blinked, caught off guard, but before she could ask, he shook his head. “Never mind. Let’s get to the point. I’ve heard about your recent surgery. Impressive work. Clearly, Wilfred has trained you well.”
He leaned back slightly, his tone turning measured. “The association doesn’t let talent go to waste, especially someone as young and capable as you.”
The implication was clear-a direct invitation.
Karina exhaled quietly, her shoulders easing just a fraction. It was what she had suspected all along. The association wanted to recruit her. At least now, the mystery was solved.
“Thank you for the recognition,” she began, her tone polite but firm.

“But,” Karina continued, “I’m not interested in joining the association. I’m content with my current job and don’t have ambitions to make waves in the medical field. My focus is on treating patients and doing my work well.” Karina couldn’t help but feel the very existence of the association was misguided.

Professor Zeller’s lips curled into a faint sneer. “You really are cut from the same cloth as Wilfred. He said something similar once.”

instead leaning forward with a piercing gaze. “Have you considered that joining the association could help you achieve those goals faster? Better resources, broader networks-more lives saved”

darkened, and the harsh scrape of
his chair against the marble floor filled the room. “If you don’t join the association, you have no future! Your recommendation letters your papers-they won’t see the light of day!”
Karina’s heart tightened for a moment, but she had prepared for this.
“My papers can wait. As for a recommendation letter, well… I already have someone who promised to write one for me.” Her words were deliberate, firm, and accompanied by a calm smile.
She maintained that same composed smile as she left the association.
Harley escorted her to the door, watching her retreating figure. The breeze ruffled his hair as he stood there, hands in his pockets. “Idiot,” he muttered under his breath.
