“Nash, there’s a doctor here, an obstetrician with thirty years of experience.”
The doctor was a middle-aged woman with glasses, exuding an air of professionalism, which reassured them.
“Please save my wife. Ensure that both she and the baby are safe. I’ll pay whatever it takes!” Nash pleaded with the doctor, willing to give up everything for their safety.
“Let me through, quickly!” The doctor, focused and diligent, wasted no time and went straight to Nina.
The traffic jam seemed unmovable for the time being.
Nina was already bleeding. She had scheduled a C-section and was in contact with her doctor. Today, she planned to deal with Miranda and then head to the hospital for delivery.
The unexpected onset of labor meant she had to deliver naturally. She desperately wanted Nash’s presence, her hands reaching out but failing to find him. She grabbed onto anything for support, crying out in pain.
The doctor beside her tried to soothe her, “Don’t worry, stay calm, and open your legs.”
Nina, barely conscious, followed the instructions, trying to stay awake and spread her legs. The pain was overwhelming, but she managed to stay somewhat lucid.
The doctor kept talking to her while examining her. Outside, Nash was frantic.
“Check ahead, see what’s causing the delay, and if there’s any way to help. We need to get Nina to the hospital now!” Nash commanded, knowing that every second counted. Nina’s labor was complicated by the poison in her system, making the situation even more dire. He wanted to check on her but the heavy scent of blood kept him at bay. He had to wait, anxiety gnawing at him with every sound of her pain from inside the car.
“It’s not working. The baby isn’t coming out. You need to push harder and the baby will be out soon!” the doctor urged Nina, who was giving it her all but couldn’t find the strength. Her pale face and trembling body showed her exhaustion.
The doctor wiped her sweat, offering reassurance despite her own urgency, “Keep pushing, don’t pass out now. Just a bit more, you can do this!”
Nina fought to stay awake, knowing that passing out could mean the end for both her and the baby. She bit down, trying to keep her focus. Her body was drenched in sweat and her energy rapidly depleting.
Nash, outside the car, was even more anxious, his fists clenched tightly.
When he saw the traffic starting to clear, with cars slowly moving, he forced himself into the passenger seat, despite the overpowering smell of blood inside the car. Unable to open the windows, he covered his nose and mouth with his hand. “Drive faster!” Nash urged the driver, his voice tense and urgent.
The driver floored the gas, with police escorting them through the emergency lane. Nash glanced back at Nina, who was ghostly pale and barely holding on.
Her eyes seemed unfocused, and it looked like she might collapse any moment. Nash’s heart raced with fear that she might not survive this.
Trying to ignite her will to fight, he shouted, “Nina, you are this baby’s mother. If he loses you, he won’t live a normal life. You have to stay with him. He can survive without me, but without you, he won’t make it!”
