“Alright, I’ll take you to meet Mr. Micah tomorrow,” the man said.
He didn’t overthink it. Mainly, he noticed Nina’s statement about being from Birkham. Mr. Micah also spoke English and had a similar appearance to Nina. If Nina could cook meals that Mr. Micah enjoyed, it would be a way of showing their gratitude.
“Thank you,” Nina replied.
Although she wasn’t used to Yaren food, she managed to eat half a bowl of mashed potatoes. In an unfamiliar environment, she needed to maintain her strength.
After dinner, Nina returned to the small room. There was no bed, so the man had brought them two pieces of cardboard to sleep on. Lying on the cardboard, Nina’s thoughts drifted to Scarlett and the others. She wondered how they were doing.
The boy whispered in her ear, “I need to go with you tomorrow.”
Although Nina hadn’t mentioned him in her plan while talking to the man, he insisted on going. He had to keep an eye on Mr. Micah, ready to act at the slightest hint of trouble.
“Your hand is injured. You might have to do some work tomorrow.”
“I can handle it,” the boy said firmly.
“Alright, get some rest then,” Nina said, not arguing further.
Soon, there was a knock on the door. The boy quickly got up and opened it to find the man holding a white charger. “Here’s the charger you asked for.”
“Thank you,” the boy said, handing the charger to Nina.
She realized it was a very old type of charger. With a sigh, she said, “It doesn’t fit.”

“That’s the only type of charger we have around here. Mr. Micah might have the right one. You can ask him tomorrow,” the man suggested, noticing Nina’s disappointment.
“Alright, thanks,” Nina replied.
After the man left, Nina looked at the boy. “You still haven’t told me your name.”
“I’m Carl,” he said.
Nina nodded. “If we survive this, will you come back to Birkham with me?”
“No,” Carl said firmly.
Nina was surprised.
“This is my homeland. I’ll live and die here,” Carl said with unwavering determination.
Nina understood. “Let’s hope things get better.”
Meanwhile, with Nina’s phone off, Nash couldn’t reach her, nor could Scarlett. The mysterious woman with the bandages also tried calling Nina with Scarlett’s phone but couldn’t get through. Both sides were searching for Nina.
The next day, Nina woke up and went to the school with the man. The “school” was a rundown, low building, with overgrown weeds in the yard. The children were gathered around a small table, reading from yellowed papers.
Nina listened carefully and heard them reciting, “Practice makes prefect.”
“That’s not quite right,” Nina interrupted gently. “It’s ‘Practice makes perfect,’ not ‘Practice makes prefect’.”
She wrote the correct word and pronunciation on the paper for them.
The children were stunned.
From a distance, Mr. Micah noticed Nina, particularly the green bead bracelet on her wrist as she wrote.
