When he sensed it, he knew immediately.
“Knowing too much isn’t good,” Micah warned her. “But you got hurt partly because of me, so I won’t let it happen again.”
He didn’t want to disrupt Nina’s life.
Nina thought for a moment. “It’s okay. My life won’t be easily taken here.”
“Let’s go,” Micah said, continuing to escort her.
Nina frowned slightly. He avoided the topic of the Pharaoh, which suggested he was intentionally keeping it from her. Maybe he didn’t trust her. Mentioning the Pharaoh didn’t elicit any significant reaction from Micah either, hinting at a possible connection he didn’t want to disclose. Nina felt Micah could be a breakthrough. She should keep an eye on his movements without alerting him.
“Miss Nina is back.”
As soon as Nina and Micah returned to the village, someone called out. They had been worried since she had been gone for so long.
Just then, Nash came out and saw her with Micah. His scrutinizing gaze landed on Micah. He walked over and asked, “Why did you take so long? I was just about to come get you.”
“I fell asleep for a bit and lost track of time. Let me introduce you. This is Mr. Micah, the village schoolteacher. This is Nash York,” Nina said.
Micah smiled slightly and extended his hand. “Hello. I’ve heard from the villagers that you saved everyone.”
Nash, though wary and reserved, shook his hand politely. “Yes, I’ve heard about you too. You’re the teacher here, but you don’t seem like you’re from the village.”
Micah replied, “I’m here to teach the children. I’m not originally from the village.”
“That doesn’t verify your identity,” Nash said in a low voice.
Seeing the conversation dying, Nina, aware of the villagers’ respect for Micah, intervened. “It’s late and we haven’t had dinner yet. Have you both eaten?”
Nash’s gaze softened as he looked at her. “We’re waiting for you.”
“Great, let’s eat together,” Nina suggested with a smile, then turned to Micah. “Join us, you haven’t eaten yet.”
“Sure,” Micah agreed.
Nash frowned, surprised by Nina’s familiarity with Micah.
They went to prepare the meal together.
“I’ll help,” Micah offered, not wanting to freeload.
Nash stepped in, blocking his way with one arm. “Mr. Micah, you’re our guest. Please, just have a seat.”
Micah complied and sat down.
Village meals were simple. It was Nina and Micah’s first time eating together. Her attention was focused on him, noting that he wasn’t picky. Whatever the village had, he ate without complaint. His manners were elegant, very different from the locals. “Is there something on my face?” Micah asked, noticing Nina’s gaze.
Caught staring, Nina quickly said, “No, I just thought you were eating too little. Have some more.”
She used the serving utensils to put more food on his plate, trying to cover her embarrassment.
Nash, perplexed by Nina’s attentiveness, felt his mood sour.
Nina, focused on uncovering Micah’s identity and unaware of Nash’s demeanor, continued her conversation.
The meal ended harmoniously. Micah then said his goodbyes and left.
Nina watched him leave, pondering. If the person who tried to kill her knew Micah, he would probably meet them. Tomorrow, she decided, she would follow Micah.
“Have you stared enough?” Nash’s cold voice interrupted her thoughts.
