“Call the medic. I want to see if my kidney is a match for Scott,” Nash declared. If his kidney was compatible, he planned to donate it to Scott, repaying the debt owed to him for Nina’s sake.
Felix was taken aback. “Captain, are you sure about this? Your own health…”
“I’m sure,” Nash replied firmly.
The medic arrived quickly, but without advanced hospital equipment, they could not determine compatibility here.
The medic explained, “Given the current situation, Captain, making such a sacrifice now would be highly risky. If you do this, other allied forces and the small nations within the Yaren territory might seize the opportunity to attack. It would force our country to either retaliate or be seen as weak.”
Not retaliating would invite mockery, but retaliating would mean entering a world war.
Nash was silent for a few seconds before responding decisively, “We can do it confidentially.”
The medic shook his head. “That’s not possible. Too many eyes are watching. Unless the state appoints someone to take your place, this procedure can’t happen while you’re still in command.”
Before the medic could finish, Scott started coughing violently.
A quick glance from Nash silenced the medic. Nash hurried over to Scott. “Scott, how are you feeling?”
“Are you talking to me?” Scott frowned, looking confused and stern.
Nash had not expected that both Scott and Scarlett would be so severely tortured that they not only no longer resembled their former selves, but also lost their memories.
“Yes, you’re Scott,” Nash affirmed, pressing his lips together to steady his thoughts.
Scott’s voice was hoarse. “Are you my friend?”
“…Yes.” Nash found himself acknowledging a deeper connection.
Previously, he was indifferent towards Scott because of Nina. But now, Nash and Nina had a child together and seeing how much Scott had sacrificed for Nina, Nash’s perspective had changed.
Scott looked around, taking in his new surroundings, which were very different from where he had been held. “Did you rescue me? ” he asked, his brows furrowing as he tried to make sense of it all. There was no one else but Nash.
“Yes,” Nash replied.
Scott fell silent. He had no memory of Nash, but he vividly recalled a face that had appeared in his mind during the months of torment. One name had stuck with him, Nina. It was a woman’s name, that much he was certain.
Scott hesitated but then asked, “You said you’re my friend. Do you know Nina? What’s my connection to her?”
Nash’s lips tightened. He wasn’t sure how to respond. He hadn’t realized how deeply Scott felt for Nina, evident in the way her name persisted in Scott’s fractured memory.
Nash wrestled with the thought of his own uncertain fate. If he couldn’t be cured, if he was destined to die, then perhaps saving Nina and ensuring Scott could stay by her side would be the best course of action. Scott would love and protect her in his stead.
But before Nash could find the words, Scott sensed something in his silence. “Your expression… does it mean Nina and I didn’t get along well? Or is she someone I shouldn’t have loved?”
