Nina pushed Nash away. “Go do what you need to do. As long as my child is alive…”
“Are you saying you don’t want me anymore?”
Nash could not bear to hear the rest of her words. His bloodshot eyes were fixed on Nina, his gaze intense and full of emotion. The redness in his eyes spread, and layers of sorrow seemed to rise within him.

Nash’s heart was in agony. He would rather Nina scream at him, hit him, blame him, rather than understand him.
Nash wanted to say more, but he felt a metallic taste in his throat and suppressed it. “Eat something first. I’ll go get something and be right back,” he said hoarsely, placing the bowl of oats porridge on the bedside table before leaving quickly. As soon as he exited the room, he could not hold back any longer. Blood spurted from his mouth.
“Sir, your medicine.” Nash’s personal guard, Eugene Xander said as he quickly approached Nash.
He took out a small white bottle, poured three pills into his hand, and handed them to Nash. Nash swallowed the pills and leaned against the wall, catching his breath.
Eugene said, “The President has sent more people. Maybe you should return.”
The President was determined for Nash to inherit the position. If Nash withdrew or opposed him now, the President would never allow it.
A flash of determination crossed Nash’s eyes. “I’m not leaving.”
He would not abandon Nina again. She was already angry with him, already saying she did not want him. If he left now, he knew she would never see him again. “Keep an eye on her.”
“Yes, sir.”
Eugene watched Nash leave.
Nash was the child the President had found and brought back, someone he had pulled from the brink of death at great expense.
From the moment Nash was found, the President assigned Eugene to watch over and protect Nash. He had watched over Nash for more than three years before Nash finally regained consciousness. Eugene had been with him through it all, witnessing Nash’s struggles and hearing him cry out “Nina” in his moments of pain.
Eugene hesitated before entering the room where Nina was.
Hearing the door, Nina thought it was Nash returning, but instead, she saw an unfamiliar face. Still shaken from recent events, she was on high alert.
“Don’t be afraid. I’m not here to harm you. I’m Mr. Nash’s personal guard… or bodyguard, if you prefer,” Eugene said, noticing the caution in Nina’s eyes and raising his hands in a calming gesture.
