Nina knew they could not keep this up. Once darkness fully set in, their chances of escape would be even slimmer.
As they passed by a tree trunk, Nina used it as leverage, planting her foot firmly and springing up to snap off a branch. In one swift motion, she spun around and drove the branch into the snake’s weak spot, right at the seven-inch mark. The snake dropped to the ground, lifeless. The tiger roared furiously, seemingly enraged by the death of its companion.
“Climb up the cliff!” Nash shouted, throwing the torch at the tiger.
The tiger did not dodge. The torch hit its head and fell to the ground, extinguished. A small flame flared up on the tiger’s head, causing it to freeze in panic.
Nina seized the opportunity, picked up the fallen torch, and with all her strength, drove it into the tiger’s body.
A single, lethal strike.
Nash was stunned.
In the five years they had been apart, his Nina had become incredibly strong.
“The flame is out. We need to find a place to settle down quickly and get a fire going,” Nina said, recalling a cliff they had passed earlier with a cave entrance. She decided to take a chance and head there for the night.
The night was pitch black, and the Yaren Tribe was engulfed in the flames of war.

Watching Nash busy himself with preparations, she felt a wave of gratitude. “I’m glad I let you come with me. I don’t know what I’d do right now if you weren’t here.”
“You definitely should let me come with you. I’m your husband, after all. A man should protect his woman,” Nash replied as he got the fire going and motioned for her to come closer. “Come warm up by the fire. I’ll go look for some larger stones.” But just as Nina was about to sit down, the fire suddenly went out.
Startled, she instinctively moved closer to Nash, who wrapped her in his arms. “Don’t worry, I’m here.”
Nash lit his lighter and noticed water dripping from above onto the spot where the fire had been. “I was careless,” he chuckled as he began to move the wet wood, but Nina stopped him. “What is it?” Nash asked, puzzled.
Nina pointed to the ceiling of the cave and whispered, “It’s snake venom. Let’s take it down together in one strike.”
“Alright, your call. Once we’re done, I’ll cook us some snake meat,” Nash responded without hesitation. Seeing Nina’s lack of fear made him marvel at her transformation once again.
With synchronized movements, they swiftly dealt with the snake. It was as thick as an arm, and just as deadly as the one that had chased them earlier. When it hit the ground, the cave shook slightly.
