She was only speculating, though. The cave was always dark, and the books mentioned that the Seven-Leaf Clover needed some sunlight to be considered top-quality. It thrived in the shade but also needed sunlight. It was almost like people, needing the company of others, yet craving solitude.
A contradictory existence.
Nash considered her suggestion and realized she might be right.
He offered, “I’ll go back up and check. You can wait here.”
“No, let’s go together. If that snake’s husband shows up, we can watch each other’s backs.”
They shared a knowing smile. It was a joke that only people in sync could understand, just like them. They both knew exactly what the other meant.
“There really is Seven-Leaf Clover here.”
After searching the cave, they finally found a clump of Seven-Leaf Clover in a secluded spot. It was remarkable how nature had crafted such a place.
Deep within the cave, there was an opening that allowed sunlight to stream in. The clover thrived there, standing out vividly against the other weeds, like a princess among commoners. Nash was thrilled and reached out to pick it, but Nina stopped him.
“What’s wrong? Is there a problem?” he asked, puzzled.
“You can’t use your hands, and you can’t damage the roots. It needs to stay intact. Otherwise, it’ll wilt before we even get it back,” Nina explained, recalling what she had read in her books. Seeing Nash’s expression of disdain, she chuckled, “It’s as delicate and precious as a princess. You need to treat it carefully.”
Nash held Nina’s coat and gently reminded her, “Just be careful. If it gets damaged, we can always find another one. But you can’t get hurt, understand? I can’t face Orion if anything happens to you.” “Okay,” Nina replied with a smile, but she handled the clover with extreme care.
The roots of the Seven-Leaf Clover were fragile, likely due to the cold, damp environment it grew in. Nina carefully dug up the entire plant, taking extra soil to keep it from drying out on the way back. With the herb in hand, it was time to return. Thinking of Orion’s condition, Nina did not want to delay any longer.
Nash was even more eager to get back. As soon as they were both out of the cave, they started their journey back.
The fog grew thicker, reducing visibility to less than a meter. They had to hold hands, and eventually, Nash had to wrap his arm around her to guide her.
He was not willing to risk losing Nina to a moment of carelessness.
“Wait.” Nina suddenly called out, signaling Nash to let go of her hand as she moved to examine a nearby tree trunk.
“It’s one of our markers,” Nash said, alarmed.
They had started marking their path near the cave, which meant they had been walking in circles for a while.
Or worse, they had not moved at all and had been trapped in an illusion.
Realizing this, Nash quickly pulled Nina close.
“We need to wait for the fog to clear before we can go any further.”
Nina knew better than to keep moving. She feared that if they continued, they would stray even further off course and end up lost, unable to find their way back.
