Seeing the person he loved most trying to arrange things for him tore Wilfred apart. It felt like he was feeling torn between two extremes, an unbearable torment.
“I’m sorry… I just want you to be happy. I want you to-”
“I know,” Wilfred interrupted gently, offering Nina a soft smile. His eyes were full of warmth and sincerity as they rested on Nina.
“Nina, can I hug you?”
This was the first and only time he had asked, and it would be the last.
Once Orion’s bone marrow transplant was successful and he recovered, Micah and Pharaoh would prepare the ceremony for her.
Nina would not stay long in the Yaren Tribe and she would return to Birkham with Nash. Wilfred had already established his practice in Salterra. If he closed it and followed her to Birkham, his feelings for her would be obvious to everyone.
He and Nina might not see anything wrong with it, maintaining a respectful distance, but others would not see it that way. Wilfred could handle the gossip, but he would not let Nina’s reputation suffer.
Nina did not say anything but quickly opened her arms, giving Wilfred a hug.
He held her lightly, “Nina, you and Nash haven’t even had a proper wedding yet. When you do, I’ll make sure to give you a big wedding gift. Nash has plenty of friends to be his groomsmen. He doesn’t need me. And you have Scarlett, and your best friend, Yvonne…” “You’re my family,” Nina interrupted.
That simple statement was Nina’s way of acknowledging Wilfred’s place in her life.
Wilfred was happy for her, knowing she was headed for a good future, but it left him feeling empty inside. This was as far as their journey together could go.
Orion’s surgery was scheduled for 9 AM. It was a beautiful day as Pharaoh and Wilfred entered the operating room.
Nina, Nash, Micah, Freya, and Joker were there, even Mr. Kerr showed up.
Nina remembered Mr. Kerr well. He had saved her when Miranda tried to harm her. It was the first time Mr. Kerr had appeared since Nina and Nash had arrived in the tribe.
Mr. Kerr’s hair had turned completely white, and he looked much frailer than five years ago, leaning on his cane as he walked.
“Mr. Kerr, what brings you here?” Micah asked, surprised.
Trembling, Mr. Kerr pulled out a small charm from his robe, “Nina, I haven’t been well lately. I just heard about you. After the surgery, make sure Orion wears this. It’s a charm I once prayed over for protection.” “Thank you,” Nina said politely as she accepted it.
Micah leaned in to explain, “He was one of my father’s old comrades and a close friend.”
“Nice to meet you, Mr. Kerr,” she said with a respectful nod.
After giving the gift, Mr. Kerr left, but Nash remained cautious.
Leaning in, he whispered to Nina, “I want to check this out before you give it to Orion.”
Nash’s concern was valid. Micah overheard but did not object. It was better to be safe.
Nash’s instincts were right. When he inspected the charm, he found something hidden inside. The charm had a silver clasp, and when opened, it revealed a small stash of white powder.
The discovery instantly put Nash on high alert.
Micah immediately ordered the Mr. Joker, “Get this powder analyzed in the lab. And keep an eye on Mr. Kerr.”
