Vera felt like she was being played for a fool. The realization twisted like a knife in her chest, but she forced out a cold, mocking laugh.
“You really think I’m that easy to fool?”
The moment she saw the name “Baby” flash across the screen-and the flicker of guilt in his eyes-she knew.
This wasn’t just some random contact.
For all she knew, he had been with someone else the entire time they were together.
Sam’s expression darkened. “Well, maybe if you’d let me touch you, I wouldn’t have needed to find someone else.”
He shot her a sharp, mocking smirk. “But looking at you now, seems like you’re not so innocent yourself. Barely a second after leaving me, and you’re already cozying up to another guy. What’s wrong, Vera? Was I not enough for you?”
His words grew crueler by the second, his tone dripping with bitterness.
Seeing her standing next to another man ignited something inside him a twisted, ugly fire of resentment and wounded ego.
She had never given herself to him.
But she had no problem giving herself to someone else?
Vera stood frozen, stunned by the sheer audacity of the man she had once cared about.
Had she really loved this kind of person?
Her stomach twisted, the pain of betrayal settling in.
“Watch your mouth.” Caleb’s voice was cold as ice.
He pulled Vera behind him in one swift, protective motion.
It was such a simple act, but in that moment-when she was at her most vulnerable-it gave her an overwhelming sense of comfort.
She stared blankly at his broad back, feeling an unfamiliar warmth settle in her chest.
Caleb, however, felt nothing but disgust toward Sam.
“You wronged her,” he said flatly, his voice laced with quiet rage. “And yet, you still have the audacity to turn it around on her?”
“This has nothing to do with you!” Sam snapped. “Listen, pretty boy, this is between me and Vera. Stay the hell out of it.
With that, he reached out, grabbing for Vera’s arm.
But Caleb was faster.
There was no way in hell he was going to let that happen.
It wasn’t just because Vera was temporarily tied to him. It was about basic human decency. No man should ever lay hands on a woman like that.
And who knew what someone like Sam was capable of?
Caleb’s hand shot out, catching Sam’s wrist midair.
Despite his slender, elegant fingers, his grip was like steel.
A crushing force that made Sam wince in pain.
“Let go!” Sam hissed, struggling.
Caleb’s expression didn’t change. “I will. But first, promise you won’t come near her again.”
Sam clenched his jaw, stubborn.
He hadn’t gotten enough out of Vera yet. There was no way he was going to let her go that easily. But then Caleb tightened his grip.
Harder.
The pressure increased to the point where it felt like his wrist might snap.
Even as a grown man, Sam couldn’t endure the pain. He broke, quickly caving.
“Fine! I promise I won’t go near her again! Just let go!”
Caleb released him without hesitation, shoving him back.
“Now get lost.”
Sam stumbled backward, nearly falling.
Before leaving, he shot Vera one last hateful glare-his resentment clear.
Vera saw it all.
That last resentful look Sam gave her before leaving.
And it only made the weight in her chest heavier.
Just when she thought things couldn’t get any worse, life had a way of proving her wrong.
But she knew who she had to thank for pulling her out of that situation.
She let out a slow breath and turned to Caleb. “Thank you… I don’t know what I would’ve done if you weren’t here.”
A self-deprecating smile tugged at
her lips. “You must think I’m pathetic. My family’s bankrupt, my life’s a mess, and now I find out the many thought I loved was just using me”

She shook her head, letting out a dry laugh. “And the worst part? I had I idea
all of
it was completely blind too
it until now.”
The more she thought about it, the more ridiculous it all felt.
First, her family lost everything, leaving them scrambling for survival.
Now, she had to deal with this humiliation on top of it.
One more hit, and she wasn’t sure if she could keep standing.
“It’s not your fault,” Caleb said, his voice steady.
Vera blinked at him, surprised by the certainty in his tone.
His gaze softened slightly as he added, “He’s the one who wronged you. You don’t need to blame yourself
for that.”
Then, after a brief pause, he
continued, “You heard him promise
just now. But if he ever comes
looking for you again-call me. I’ll
handle it.”
