Nina could not help but wonder why she had never heard him bring it up before. Maybe because there was always an unspoken agreement between Nash and Nina not to pry too much into each other’s business. It was just a matter of mutual respect. Besides, he probably could not fully disclose everything. She quickly averted her gaze.
Out of the blue, someone chimed in to ease the tension, saying, “Mr. George, we get where you’re coming from. We’re not here to gossip. It’s just that the truth is evident. Even Vice Commander Frank is also feeling indignant on your behalf. After all, you’re our elder, and you haven’t been in the know for long, right? Honestly, it looks like Nash doesn’t have much respect for you.”
Nina felt like these folks were really going after Nash. She looked at Nash again, noticing his silence. Knowing him, he typically would not tolerate such gossip in his presence. It seemed like he was likely concerned about Grandpa George’s dignity, especially since these were also his close associates.
“Nash, it’s not surprising that we’d think that way. We’ve been through thick and thin together. You keep everything so low-key, even something as big as getting married, and you didn’t inform us. Are you really that reluctant to marry?” Frank smirked, relentless in his teasing, even at a birthday banquet.
Although Nina did not understand why they were targeting Nash, it seemed like he had become a thorn in their side. She seemed to understand why Nash had not actively interacted with Grandpa George before. Even if Nash had been close to Grandpa George, he probably avoided it because of these people.
Facing them, Nina glared at Nash, instinctively holding his hand, and calmly said, “That’s not true, everyone’s got it wrong. Nash respects me and complies with my wishes to keep things private. I work for his company and want to make achievements based on my own abilities. Just like Grandpa George said, we, as a couple, prefer to keep a low profile.”
As she spoke, she unintentionally drew Nash’s gaze back to her. He stared at her deeply, seemingly surprised that she was defending him. Their attention shifted to Nina.
“Where do you find wives who don’t need acknowledgment of her status? If you’re ever wronged, you can tell us, we won’t let him off easy!” Frank said, as if he could see right through them.
Nina listened to his words which were outwardly sympathizing with her but actually targeting Nash.
She tactfully smiled and replied, “You’re really mistaken. Nash has told me about his past, and he still bears many scars. I’m sure he endured a lot of hardships and took many bullets during his military service. As soon as she finished speaking, Frank’s expression changed. Nash’s gaze darkened as he tightly pressed his lips together.
Nina mentioned these things just to test whether any of Nash’s scars were for them. After all, he had been injured for her sake once before.
She suddenly understood why Nash did not remember her. He had served in the military, serving the people, while she was just one of many.
He had saved so many people so it was impossible for him to remember everyone. Yet she remembered him for a lifetime.
She also realized that his risking his life to save her was just a duty, not driven by any other motive. The bond between them was merely her illusion. Nina smiled bitterly. In fact, they were even now. He had saved her once, and she had saved him once so they were even.
Seeing them all silent, Grandpa George spoke up for Nash again, even more sternly this time, “Nash brought Nina here today to introduce her to everyone. You folks lack any discernment. Each of you should have three drinks as a penalty!”
With Grandpa George’s directive, none dared to protest. After a moment of silence, Frank changed his attitude again, personally raising his glass and walking up to Nash and Nina, “My bad, let me make it up to you.”
