“Nina, this drink is for you.”
At the same time, Frank handed a glass of wine to Nina. Nash wrapped an arm around her shoulder and took the glass from Frank’s hand. “She’s allergic to alcohol, so I’ll drink on her behalf.”
Nash quickly downed the drink in his hand. Others chimed in, “Wow! Look at Nash here. Back in the camp, he was tough as nails, always ready to face any challenge. Now, all soft-hearted for his sweet wife. Ah, the iron-blooded man has gone tender!”
“You bet.”
“Nash, since you’ve introduced her to all of us, when are you planning to have a proper wedding ceremony? You two haven’t had one yet, right? When the time comes, I’ll give you a big wedding gift. We’ll come to toast to your happiness!”
Nina watched as they laughed. She could tell that despite some initial discontent towards Nash, Grandpa George’s words had smoothed things over. Some of these people were genuinely caring.
She maintained her smile throughout. Nash’s lips curved slowly as he spoke, “I’ll make sure to inform you all as soon as we decide.”
“Absolutely! Marriage is a big deal, the most important thing in life. Even if you keep it low-key, you shouldn’t neglect the bride.” One of them remarked.
Nash smiled but did not respond. At that moment, a nimble voice chimed in.
“Grandpa.”
Everyone turned to see a young woman approaching.
“Oh, my darling granddaughter is here.”
Grandpa George’s face lit up as he saw her. He walked towards the direction of the voice with his arms wide open.
As she approached, she hugged him tightly. “Grandpa, I’ve missed you so much.”
Grandpa George hugged her back, his eyes full of affection. “Grandpa missed you too.”
Nina’s eyes widened. She seemed familiar with this girl. Was she Grandpa George’s granddaughter? The same girl she saw at Zoe’s party last time?
“Hi Nash.” The girl wriggled out of Grandpa George’s embrace, catching sight of Nash’s slight smile. His crescent-shaped eyes seemed to shimmer like moonlight. Nash nodded in acknowledgment. “Grandpa, Nash has changed a lot since before, so cold and aloof.” Nestled in Grandpa George’s arms, Eve remarked coyly.
Grandpa George patted her head, chuckling. “Mind your manners. You’ve grown up and things are different now. Nash is now a married man.”
The remark soured Eve’s mood, and she huffed in response.
From the nearby crowd came a teasing voice, “You little girl, is Nash the only one in your eyes?”
“Well, isn’t it true? Ever since Nash rescued her from the black bear back then, she’s been his little admirer. Whenever she comes to camp, it’s all about Nash this, Nash that. She completely ignores the rest of us. But don’t forget, who used to take her on hikes and adventures?”
Feeling embarrassed, Eve chuckled awkwardly. “I haven’t forgotten about you all. You’re all family to me and Grandpa. I just thought I’d greet everyone one by one.”
After the teasing subsided, Grandpa George gestured to her. “Eve, this is Nash’s wife, you can call her Nina.”
“Hello, Nina,” Eve greeted Nina politely.
Nina courteously responded, “Hello.”
However, Eve’s gaze did not linger on her.
