Julia glanced at Nash, her warmth now replaced with a distant politeness. “No need, you’re a guest, just sit there.”

“I’ve been calling you several times. Why aren’t you responding?”
Eve noticed Nina seemed lost in thought, so she leaned in and whispered, “Do your parents not like Nash?”
Nina asked, “Why would you say that?”
“I can tell they don’t give him a warm reception. It’s like they don’t like him at all,” Eve remarked. “It’s the first time I’ve seen Nash being so humble. He must be trying to impress your parents.” Nina pursed her lips. “Maybe he wants to leave a good impression on them.”
“I’ve never seen Nash so patient before. It’s clear that he values you, and that extends to your family. I understand,” Eve added.
She had spent some time with Nash when she was a child. Back then, everyone in the military doted on her, except for Nash.
He was different, reserved and often quiet. She tried to talk to him, but he rarely responded. Her grandfather had told her to respect Nash as if he were her brother. She remembered that.
Despite his aloofness, she still regarded him as her brother. Her grandfather had said Nash was just like her so she understood him.
Nina did not say anything. Eve did not know about Nina and Nash’s impending divorce, and Nina did not want to say more.
As for Nash’s continued effort to impress her parents after their arranged marriage was exposed, Nina did not quite understand. Perhaps it was his innate politeness.
Seeing Nash rolling up his sleeves and working, Julia remarked, “Is this really necessary?”
“This is what I should be doing,” Nash replied.
Julia, standing by the stove, still had her reservations, despite Nash’s display of humility before her. “I know the York family is affluent and influential, and there are many women who would aspire to marry into it. Our Nina might appear to be marrying up, but she’s the most precious person in our family. If you have other choices, don’t hold her back.”
