She caught a faint scent of disinfectant.
Instinctively, she looked up. The man was wearing a black coat over a sweater, with dress pants and leather shoes. His face bore a slight smile, and he stared at her with his brown eyes.
His face was fairer than his hands and he wore a pair of gold-rimmed glasses. His lips curved naturally into a soft smile, giving him an approachable appearance, and a small mole marked the corner of his left eye.
Despite his friendly appearance, Nina felt a chill run through her.
A chill that penetrated to the bone.
“Ivy…” the man murmured, staring at Nina.
Trying to calm her unease, Nina stood up, “Who are you calling?”
Seeing no reaction from her, the man stood up too. He looked at her with those deep brown eyes meaningfully as he said, “It seems I mistook you for someone else.”
“Could you give me my things back?” Nina asked.
The man smiled silently and handed her the shopping bags.
Nina quickly took them, and the moment she touched his hand, she felt that icy chill again. “Excuse me, I need to go.”
The man stepped aside, and Nina hurried past him, keeping her head down.
She did not look back, nor did she want to interact with him further.
The man watched her retreating figure, softly murmuring the name “Ivy.” His voice was drawn out, revealing no hint of emotion.
He only turned away after Nina was out of sight. Playing with the string of green beads in his hand, he walked forward.
After about ten minutes, and after navigating several turns, he arrived at the base of a building.
It was a quiet area, mostly office buildings used for business. Few people were around, making it quite secluded.
He climbed the stairs slowly, heading to the fourth floor.
There was only one room on this floor.
He turned the doorknob once, then as he was about to turn it a second time, he squinted slightly. He paused, and then proceeded to open the door.
“Why are you so late? I’ve been waiting for you for a long time!” Miranda was sitting directly opposite the door, clearly waiting for him.
The man calmly closed the door, took off his black coat, and replaced it with a white lab coat, transforming back into a doctor.
Adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses, he said, “You’re anxious because you want my help again. It hasn’t even been a few days, and you’re already impatient?” “Write it down. I can’t hear you!” Miranda demanded coldly.
The man circled around the desk and sat in his office chair. Leaning back with his head resting on the backrest, his gaze fixed on her. “You can read lips. Don’t you understand what I’m saying?” Miranda pursed her lips and then spoke, “Wilfred, I don’t want to go on like this. Help me get my hearing back. I still have work to do, and this is affecting my life!”
She had struggled to break into the entertainment industry and could not afford to fall apart now.
She had intentionally damaged her hearing to gain Nash’s sympathy and keep him close. Having been injured for Nash before, losing her hearing was meant to evoke his guilt.
This was her way of keeping Nash close. At the same time, it had increased her fear. She could not lose her career. She had worked too hard to get where she was and was not about to lose it now.
Wilfred Yates looked at Miranda, a smile playing on his lips. “You said you wanted to make the act convincing, so people would believe it. If you get your hearing back, how will you continue to play the victim?” “The act is over,” she insisted.
“The act isn’t over,” Wilfred countered.
His long fingers twirled the beads, his eyes narrowing as he propped his hands on the desk. “Why don’t you deceive Ivy one more time?”
