Nina looked at Wilfred and said, “You don’t need to go through all that trouble.”
Wilfred replied, “I don’t really like fruits. The strawberries would just go bad if left uneaten, so it’s better if you have them.”
Yvonne’s eyes lingered on Wilfred, feeling something was off. He seemed very attentive to Nina.
“Let’s eat the noodles before they get soggy,” Nina suggested.
They began eating together. Wilfred stared at his bowl for a while before starting to eat, taking his time.
When Nina finished, he still had half a bowl left. As she took her bowl to the kitchen, Yvonne followed, nudging her shoulder. “Do you think he likes you?”
Nina nearly choked on her noodles. “That’s impossible. Including today, we’ve only met three times and barely talked.”
Yvonne pondered for a moment, recalling that she had not seen Wilfred around before. “But it feels like you’ve known each other for a long time by the way he looks at you. And he brought you strawberries. You love strawberries, right? Big and red ones. Isn’t that too much of a coincidence?”
“That’s a bit much, isn’t it? They’re just strawberries,” Nina said.
“Some things seem simple, but when you think about them, they’re not,” Yvonne replied. “Hasn’t he met your needs every time you’ve seen him?”
The first time, he helped her retrieve something. Then he helped her find evidence about Miranda’s hearing loss. Now, he brought strawberries. It all seemed to align with her needs perfectly.
She was certain she had never met Wilfred before, yet her instincts told her there was some sort of connection between them.
Nina glanced towards the living room, where Wilfred was eating slowly. When he noticed her looking, he gave her a smile.
“Don’t overthink it,” Nina told Yvonne. “It could be a coincidence.”
“Actually, it’s no big deal,” Yvonne conceded. “Having someone who cares about you is better than having someone who harms you.”
This made Nina think. “How do you know he won’t harm me?”
Yvonne studied Wilfred carefully. “He doesn’t seem like the type. He seems eager to please you. Maybe you’ve just never noticed, but he’s been paying attention to you for a while.”
“Yvonne, I’ve been feeling really strange lately. I’ve been having dreams that don’t seem to belong to me. I haven’t experienced any of it, yet they appear in my dreams as if they were real. And him…” Nina looked at Wilfred, “I think I’ve seen him in my dreams.”
“What kind of dreams?” Yvonne asked.
“I dreamt I was locked in a dark room,” Nina recalled. “It was so dark and terrifying, like I’d been there forever. There was a boy with me, telling me stories to comfort me. When I tried to see him clearly, I woke up.”
“You didn’t see his face. How do you know it was him?” Yvonne asked.
“The voice sounded like his,” Nina said, puzzled. “If it was a dream, and there really was a boy with me, I should have felt an unprecedented warmth. So why do I feel a chill all over when I associate it with him?”
“You’ve always had a fear of dark, enclosed spaces,” Yvonne noted.
Seeing the complex emotions in Nina’s eyes, she added, “Don’t think too much about it. Maybe it’s not as bad as it seems.”
At that moment, Wilfred finished his meal and brought his bowl and utensils to Nina. “I’m full. The noodles were great,” he said, handing her the empty bowl.
