“That’s a bit much, he even finished the soup,” Yvonne commented.
Nina nudged Yvonne with her elbow, not wanting her to say anything inappropriate, and took the bowl from Wilfred.
“I like drinking soup,” Wilfred replied.
Then he added, “I have work to get to, so I won’t disturb you two any longer.”
Nina responded, “Alright.”
Wilfred nodded to them both before walking out of the apartment. Nina saw him to the door and closed it behind him. As the door clicked shut, Wilfred paused. He turned back to look at the door for a moment, and then finally walked away.
Downstairs, a car was parked and waiting for him. Just as he was about to get in, a nearby sports car rolled down its window.
A striking woman with red hair, styled in loose waves, leaned out. Her eyes were captivating. She supported her chin with one hand, smiled playfully and asked. “Why did you move without telling me?” Seeing her, Wilfred closed his car door and smiled. “You found me quickly.”
The red-haired woman stepped out of her car, her high heels clicking on the pavement. She looked around and remarked, “Why would you choose this place? It doesn’t seem like your style at all.” Knowing Wilfred’s meticulous nature and strong sense of cleanliness, this place did not seem to match his usual standards.
Wilfred replied, “Just wanted a change. What’s up?”
“Boss wants to see you,” she said, her smile widening.
Wilfred’s expression shifted slightly, and he nodded, getting into his car.
She got back into her sports car, leading the way as Wilfred followed behind.
Back in the apartment, Nina was tidying up. “I’m heading to work. If you want to stay here, the keys are here.” Yvonne, still engrossed in her phone, said, “Your mom asked me if you’ve finalized the divorce. I told her you haven’t.” Nina, changing her shoes, looked up. “Why did you tell her that?”
Her mother did not ask her directly but went to Yvonne instead, which definitely meant something was up.
Yvonne shrugged. “She’s your mom. If I lied and she found out, she’d never trust me again. I couldn’t avoid answering too.”
Nina understood. Since her parents learned about her marriage arrangement, they were eager for her to leave it behind. “Fine, let them know then,” Nina said, not wanting to hide it but also not wanting her parents to worry too much. “I’m off to work now.”
Before leaving, Nina packed some strawberries into a box to take with her.
When she arrived near the office, Nina decided to walk the rest of the way to get some fresh air, as her morning sickness made bus rides unbearable. As she walked, she snacked on strawberries. Suddenly, she noticed a car trailing her closely. The engine was loud, catching her attention. A red-haired woman in a sports car was driving slowly beside her, giving her a knowing look. “Where did you get those strawberries?” the woman asked.
Nina found the question a bit abrupt. “I didn’t buy them,” she replied, without mentioning they were a gift. The red-haired woman squinted slightly. “I wondered where they disappeared to. Turns out, you have them.” Even though Nina did not say it outright, the woman understood perfectly.
Nina did not get what she meant. “What are you talking about?”
The red-haired woman smiled. “Nothing, really. I’m just a little envious of you.”
Those strawberry plants were Wilfred’s pride and joy. Whenever he had time, he would tend to them personally.
He did not let anyone else touch them. When the strawberries ripened, he would not share them with anyone.
And here they were in her hands. This woman must be special.
Nina thought for a moment, noticing her interest in the strawberries. “You know Wilfred Yates?”
The woman’s smile widened. “Yes, we’re friends.”
