“She’s doing well,” the assistant replied. “She’s been very busy with work lately and hasn’t been able to visit you.”
“Busy with work, huh,” Sally felt a twinge of disappointment but said, “That’s good. Being busy with work is a good sign. She’s a big star now, and she’ll only get more successful. Having lots of work means she has a bright future. I’m really happy for her.”
“Alright, Sally, I have to get back to work,” the assistant said.
“Okay.” Sally could not see Miranda in person, but she looked at the thermos bottles in her hand and quickly handed them to the assistant. “I made this chicken soup myself. She must be too busy to eat properly. Please give it to her so she can have it when she has some time.”
The assistant took the thermos bottles. “Sure, I’ll make sure she gets it.”
With that, the assistant went back inside.
Sally stayed at the entrance for a while, hoping to catch a glimpse of Miranda, but it was in vain. After lingering for a long time, she finally got into her car and left.
The assistant went to the lounge where Miranda was sitting there, doing nothing.
“Miranda, I sent Sally away. She left this chicken soup for you,” the assistant said, placing the thermos on the table.
Miranda took a glace, her expression indifferent. “Got it.”
“Do you want to drink it?” the assistant asked.
“No,” Miranda replied flatly. There was no emotion in her eyes, and she was not touched by Sally’s gesture at all.
She did not even want to see her, so a couple of thermoses of chicken soup certainly would not move her. She tossed the thermos straight into the trash.
The assistant was a bit surprised by Miranda’s behavior. She had always seemed to like Sally the most.
“I don’t like to drink it anymore,” Miranda said.
The assistant had no further thoughts on Miranda’s unusual behavior, assuming she simply did not like the soup anymore.
Sally did not go home but instead went to the prison.
She wanted to visit someone.
After waiting for a while, she finally saw him.
Separated by glass, Sally’s eyes showed some emotion before quickly returning to calmness. She sat down and picked up the phone.
The man across from her was about the same age as Sally, with ordinary features that had aged considerably over time. His face was lined with wrinkles, and he wore shackles on his hands and feet, making his movements heavy. His eyes were eerie, enough to send shivers down one’s spine.
Despite his appearance, he smiled as he looked at Sally.
He picked up the phone and said, “I never expected you to visit me.”
Sally responded, “It’s been a long time. I never expected to see you again, and certainly not in prison.”
“I didn’t expect to end up in prison either,” the man paused. “But it doesn’t matter. I’ll be out soon.”
Sally was furious. “How can you say that? I entrusted you with taking care of Miranda, and you ended up in prison. She hasn’t had a good life all these years!”
“How do you know I didn’t take care of her?” the man said with a cold smile. “If it weren’t for me, she’d be dead by now.”
“I gave her to you and provided you with a sum of money. You promised to raise her well. You’re her father. How could she be okay? She’s a big star now. If people find out her father is an ex-con, how will she hold her head up? Why didn’t you think more about her?” At this moment, Sally was on the verge of exploding with anger.
If she had known it would turn out like this, she never would have given Miranda to him. In the end, it only caused her immense pain.
“You’re asking me? Why didn’t you take care of her yourself?” the man replied calmly, ignoring her anger. “To please your wealthy husband, you abandoned your daughter. And now you’re questioning me? She’s not even my biological daughter. If she were related to me by blood, I might have considered it.”
