Nina shook off his hand. “I don’t accept this. If you want to die so badly, go ahead and die!” She turned to leave.
“Nina!” Nash tried to get out of bed to follow her, but the movement pulled at his wound, and he fell back, coughing heavily.
Nina stopped and looked back, seeing him in pain, his brows furrowed. She could not help but rush back to his side. “Are you okay? Did you pull your wound? Should I call the doctor?” Despite the pain, Nash held onto her hand. “I’ll be fine as long as you don’t leave.”
Looking at his pale face and the desperation in his eyes, she found it impossible to be cold-hearted. “Alright. Lie down properly. Let the doctor check on you.”
Nash obeyed, lying back down but still asked, “So, you’re not leaving?”
Nina replied, “You got hurt because of me. If I leave now, that would be ungrateful. I still owe you.”
A small smile appeared on Nash’s lips. “As long as you stay, I’m happy.”
Seeing him smile touched Nina deeply. She had been thinking about ending things with him, but now she was not so sure.
The doctor came to check on Nash and said that he needed to rest to recover. After the doctor left, Nash looked at Nina and said, “I’m hungry.”
James, understanding the situation, quickly offered, “I’ll go get some food.” He and the others left the room, leaving Nina and Nash alone.
Nash beckoned her closer. When she approached, he pulled her into his arms. Nina rested her head on his shoulder, still worried. “Won’t it hurt your wound?”
“It doesn’t hurt,” Nash replied. “If you kiss me, I’ll heal faster.”
“Stop joking!” Nina lightly pushed him.
“Ouch!” Nash gasped in pain.
Nina immediately looked worried. “Did I hurt your wound?”
“You’re so strong, you might actually put me back in critical condition,” Nash said, pain causing cold sweat to break out on his forehead.
“Don’t say that,” Nina said, genuinely scared. “I’ll be more careful.”
Nash smiled through the pain. “Did you not sleep well last night?”
“How did you know?” she asked.
“You don’t look well-rested,” he said, gently touching her face. “I guess you were too worried about me.”
Nina lowered her eyes and admitted, “Don’t ever do that again. You nearly scared me to death.”
Nash felt a warmth knowing she cared. “Nina, lie down with me for a bit. We both need some rest.”
“How can two people fit on one bed?” she questioned.
“Just squeeze in,” Nash said, scooting over and patting the bed. “Come on, I’ll help you sleep.”
Nina gazed at his face. It was less distant and cold, and instead, much softer and kinder. She was not sure why, but she decided to go along with him and lie down.
She lay on her side, and Nash wrapped his arm around her, pulling her into his embrace. “Sleep,” he whispered.
“Okay,” she replied.
Lying there, Nina still could not fall asleep quickly. She kept shifting around in his arms.
Nash endured it silently, but Nina heard his heavy breathing and worried something was wrong. “Are you uncomfortable?” she asked.
Nash’s voice was hoarse and tinged with a bit of helplessness. “Yeah, it’s a bit uncomfortable.”
