When James saw Nina, he said, “Ma’am, what took you so long? I was about to knock on your door.”
Nina did not mention meeting Wilfred and replied, “I was talking to my chief editor for a while, so it took longer than expected. Let’s go.”
James nodded, but as Nina approached, he caught a faint scent of blood. He sniffed the air. “Ma’am, are you hurt?”
“No,” Nina said, thinking she might have picked up the scent from Wilfred. “Maybe it’s from Nash.”
James did not question it further, but he noticed the new set of beads on her wrist.
Throughout the journey, Nina kept touching the beads. She could not understand why Wilfred had given them to her. As she inspected them more closely, she noticed a hint of blood inside the beads. Was it always like this?
Nina was puzzled. She had many questions about Wilfred’s past, and now she had another mystery. However, she was certain that Wilfred would not harm her.
While on the road, Angel called her. “Nina, Penelope’s role has been snatched away.”
Nina was surprised. “Who took it? How did that happen?”
Angel replied, “We don’t know. Someone’s definitely working against her, and whoever has this kind of power must have significant backing.”
Nina agreed.
Penelope had just gained some traction and caught the audience’s attention. With her current level of buzz, she should definitely be landing roles. Her talent was undeniable, so it did not make sense that she would not get cast.
If there were really powerful forces working against her, the most obvious rival with such influence would be Miranda.
Nina did some digging. Penelope had originally been cast as the lead in a modern drama. Now, she had been replaced by a newcomer, someone who had only played minor roles before. Seeing this, even Angel’s expression turned sour, and Nina felt the same.
On the surface, it did not seem like much, but it was a covert way to insult Penelope, letting her know that she was considered less valuable than a newcomer. What kind of deep-seated grudge would lead someone to humiliate her like this?
Nina looked into the newcomer’s company and discovered it was linked to Nash’s company. That meant it was connected to Miranda. This revelation caused Nina to feel a mix of emotions. She decided to call Penelope.
“Do you have time? Let’s meet,” Nina said directly.
“Sure.”
“Let’s go to a cafe,” Nina suggested.
James hesitated and whispered, “Ma’am, Captain instructed me to ensure your safety and take you straight home.”
Nina, thinking about the newcomer being from Nash’s company and connected to Miranda, wondered if there was favoritism at play. However, due to the competitive relationship, she could not take out her personal frustrations on others.
“I’m meeting a friend,” Nina said. “Surely, I can still meet my friends, right?”
James sensed Nina’s mood was not right but did not say more. However, he did report her movements to Nash.
When Nina arrived at the cafe, Penelope was already there. Penelope took off her sunglasses and waved. “Nina, over here.”
Nina walked over. Although Penelope tried to appear unaffected, she looked tired. Nina got straight to the point. “Your role got taken?”
Penelope touched her earlobe and said, “Yes, but it’s fine. There will be other opportunities.”
Nina disagreed. “You can’t just let this slide. Someone is targeting you, and you can’t be passive about it. You’ve gained popularity. You need to seize this chance.”
Penelope gave a bitter smile. “What can I do? I have no powerful backer and no support. I’ve realized that hard work alone isn’t enough in the entertainment industry.” Nina looked at her with determination. “I can help you.”
