Nash realized that only one person had the potential to help. He looked at the increasingly frail Nina, knowing he could not afford to wait any longer.
“Stay here and keep an eye on her. I’m going to check something,” Nash told Caleb before heading back to the apartment.
Caleb, unsure of where Nash was heading, simply replied, “Okay.”
Nash knew that the kidnapping had left Nina harmed. Someone who could detect the poison so quickly and provide an antidote had to be extraordinary. He could not overlook any potential help. Nash arrived at the apartment and looked at the door next to Nina’s. It was closed, and he knocked urgently. Within a minute, the door opened.
Wilfred had been at home, seemingly expecting Nash. He showed no surprise and simply said, “Come in.”
Nash noticed Wilfred’s pale complexion and weak body. “Did you give Nina those beads?”
Wilfred poured a glass of water for Nash. “Those beads were originally hers.”
Nash’s deep eyes fixed on Wilfred as he asked calmly, “I haven’t seen you among Nina’s friends before.”
Wilfred gave a slight smile. “I’m not exactly a friend. I prefer to stay in the shadows.”
Wilfred had always seen himself that way. Someone who could only exist in darkness and could not openly form friendships. Over the years, he had come to terms with not needing friends. Only Nina held a special significance for him.
Nash’s keen eyes quickly observed Wilfred’s injuries, noting the cuts on his wrist, likely from bloodletting.
“Why didn’t you go to the hospital?”
“I’m a doctor myself,” Wilfred replied calmly from across the table. “No one understands my body better than I do.”
Nash pressed on, “So, you knew Nina was poisoned, and those beads are meant to keep her alive.”
Wilfred drank some water, his parched lips absorbing the moisture like a dying camel in the desert. After several gulps, he set the glass down and stared at Nash with his lifeless brown eyes. “Yes, she was poisoned. The worst part is, I’m powerless to cure her. All I can do is keep her alive.”
Nash’s heart tightened at these words, realizing the gravity of the situation. This was not an ordinary poison.
“I don’t know how long I can keep her alive,” Wilfred said in his indifferent tone while touching his wrist. “It could be that her life ends with my last drop of blood.”
He wasn’t afraid. His determination to find Nina had kept him alive all these years. His existence was for her.
“You’re a healer. Every drop of your blood is incredibly valuable. Is she worth it?” Nash questioned again.
“Saving her is the only thing that makes me feel truly free,” Wilfred responded with a hint of resignation in his eyes. “People like us… we don’t have freedom.”
Their lives were dictated by orders and endless commands, to the point where even their bodies did not feel like their own.
From Wilfred’s words, Nash understood that he was a victim of circumstances, craving freedom because his life was unbearable.
“This poison is called K48,” Wilfred explained. “I haven’t been able to obtain the antidote. The initial symptoms include bruising, followed by fatigue in the mid-stages. Finally, the body will rot and die.”
Nash’s brows furrowed. “Who created it?”
“Pharaoh,” Wilfred said, his eyes locking onto Nash’s. “You should know him, the leader of that criminal organization.”
