Nina was feeling calmer now and she could see how much Nash had been worrying about her. Any hurtful words she had been holding back seemed to dissipate in this moment. She hugged Nash around the waist. “Let’s not fight anymore. Let’s talk things through calmly, okay?”
“Okay,” Nash responded softly.
Nina noticed something off. “Why just one word? Are you upset?”
“No,” Nash said gently, stroking her face. “You’ve said we won’t fight anymore. How could I be upset about that?”
Nina gazed into his eyes. “What if you’ve lost faith in me and are planning to leave me? Then everything I’ve said would be pointless.”
“That’s impossible,” Nash reassured her. “We won’t be separated.”
“You won’t divorce me?” she asked.
They had been arguing about this for a long time. She had often brought up divorce.
But now, thinking about all that Nash had done for her, she realized things were not as bad as they seemed.
She might never find another person like Nash, and their baby needed a father. Growing up in a healthy family was better than being alone.
She needed to be sure of Nash’s feelings. She could not keep putting herself out there without knowing where he stood.
“I won’t divorce you,” Nash said softly. “You were the one insisting on divorce. I never said I wanted it.”
Nina recalled his previous words. “Wasn’t it you who made me think our marriage was just a transaction, saying all those hurtful things? No matter how lowly I might feel, I couldn’t cling to you shamelessly. Didn’t you ever think of making this work with me?”
At first, she had wanted to make things work with him. Now that he was placating her, she felt like she was giving in too easily.
Nash did not want to upset her further, so he conceded. “Okay, it’s all my fault. You were right to criticize me.”
With his patient and submissive response, Nina felt inclined to forgive him.
“By the way, I need to get a check-up,” Nina said, remembering the issue.
Nash asked, “What kind of check-up?”
“A physical exam,” Nina said, showing him her hand. “Look at all these bruises. I’m worried something’s wrong with my body. Plus, I’m pregnant. I can’t afford any risks. I want to find out what’s going on and treat it early. Hopefully, it’s just a false alarm.”
“We already did that,” Nash told her. “The doctors found nothing wrong with you.”
He gently touched her head.
“Really?” Nina was doubtful. “Then why do I have bruises?”
Nash pulled her sleeve down and adjusted it. “Maybe you bumped into something. Don’t worry about it.”
“Maybe,” Nina said, still trusting him.
She had had check-ups before and had always been healthy, so she trusted his reassurance.
He brought her shoes and placed them in front of her. “Your feet are cold. Put on your shoes.”
Nina followed his advice. “Are you feeling better?”
“Much better,” Nash replied. “A few more days of rest and I’ll be ready to leave the hospital. Being able to get out of bed and walk around means I’m recovering well.” “That’s good,” Nina said.
As they walked together, she added, “Next time, I won’t rely on you to protect me.”
“Hmm?” Nash turned to her. “Why do you say that?”
“I’m going to learn martial arts,” Nina said firmly. “That way, I’ll be able to protect myself and won’t need you to.”
Nash laughed. “Silly girl.”
“I’m serious,” Nina insisted. “You have so many skilled people around you. I can easily find someone to teach me.”
