Nina raised an eyebrow. “Not bad for a first attempt. Let’s see if you have a natural talent.”
Half an hour later, Wilfred emerged from the kitchen. There was no smell of smoke, which meant he had not blown up the kitchen. But when he set the dishes on the table, Nina was taken aback. She stared at Wilfred in horror.
Wilfred, sensing her confusion, calmly explained, “This is chicken heart, and this is chicken liver… both are internal organs. This part is the chicken breast, and the legs have the most tender meat…” Listening to Wilfred’s descriptions felt like a lesson in anatomy rather than a meal. “It’s not that…” Nina replied. “You didn’t have to keep it so intact. Do you have anything else?”
“I do. I made some potato chips for you,” Wilfred said. He had some leftover potatoes and, not wanting to waste them, had mashed them and baked them in the oven.
Nina felt relieved. “I’ll have the potato chips. I’ve been craving them.”
“Alright.” Wilfred quickly went to the oven to retrieve the chips. When he brought them out, he looked a bit dejected. The chips were burnt to a crisp.
“I’m sorry, I followed the instructions exactly, but they still burned.”
Wilfred had stuck to the cooking times strictly, but it had not worked out. It seemed the instructions were wrong.
Nina was astonished that someone could be this bad at cooking.
“These are pretty good,” Wilfred said, cutting a piece of chicken liver and tasting it. “It’s not tough, melts in your mouth. The timing was perfect.”
He seemed completely unaware of how unappetizing it all looked to her.
Nina could not help but laugh. “Wilfred, you really don’t belong in a kitchen.”
Wilfred was puzzled. “What do you mean? Didn’t I cook it well? I kept the chicken moist. It shouldn’t be bad.”
He was confident in his cooking, but Nina said, “It looks like an operating table, with all the organs laid out. It’s hard to have an appetite. Your skills are better suited for dissections than cooking.” Wilfred realized his mistake and put down his utensils. “I’m sorry, I didn’t notice.”
“It’s okay,” Nina said. “We can just order takeout.”
Seeing her smile, Wilfred could not help but smile back. “I’m glad you’re not mad at my cooking. Seeing you smile is a blessing.”
“Well, you’ll see me smiling a lot more often. I hope your life will be filled with blessings,” Nina continued to smile.
She knew Wilfred’s life had been tough, and she wanted to bring positivity to it, even if it was just through a smile.
