“What?” Nina was stunned. She immediately pulled her hand away and stepped back. “What nonsense are you talking about? You want me to abort the baby now? I won’t do it!”
Nash’s eyes bore into hers with a stern intensity. “Your body is not fit for pregnancy. If you terminate the pregnancy, it won’t drain your nutrients, and you might live longer. The longer you live, the more chances you’ll have. Do you understand?” His words were urgent and decisive.
He wanted to save her first.
There could always be another child.
Nina, however, wasn’t listening. The moment he mentioned abortion, she wanted to get as far away from him as possible. She didn’t want to answer him, so she turned and walked away. “Nina!” Nash called out sharply.
Nina turned back, yelling, “Didn’t the doctor say I can make it until the baby is born? Isn’t that enough?”
“You’re risking your life!” Nash retorted. “What happens to you after the baby is born?”
Nina’s eyes widened with emotion. “And if I abort the baby, will I survive?”
Nash’s only wish was for her to live. “There will be a chance!”
Nina gazed at him, seeing in his eyes a rejection of the child. This only intensified her instinct to protect the baby. She tightly held her belly, seeing Nash as a threat.
“I don’t believe you! I don’t trust you! You’re trying to deceive me!” she shouted, shaking her head.
“Nina!” Nash moved closer. “I will find a way. Just trust me. If you terminate the pregnancy, you won’t have to suffer this much!”
He knew exactly what she was going through. From the moment her arms started bruising, he knew her days would only grow more painful.
“Stay back!” Nina’s eyes were red with tears, her voice filled with despair. “How can you say such things?
“This is your child too!” she cried. “How can you be so irresponsible as a father? This baby is my only hope. I won’t let you harm him, not ever!” “Nina,” Nash pleaded, his own struggle evident. He wanted her to live, and if it meant losing the baby, he would choose her. “Listen to me…” “Don’t come any closer!” Nina shouted.
Nina’s emotions were running high, and she wasn’t thinking rationally. As a mother, her instinct was to protect her child.
She had felt the baby move for the first time, a moment of pure joy.
She couldn’t bear to lose him. Terminating the pregnancy would mean losing everything she had left to live for.
She couldn’t take that gamble and couldn’t harden her heart to do it.
Seeing Nash’s determination to proceed, Nina made a desperate move. “If you come any closer, I will jump! If my baby dies, I will die too!” Nina stood by the window, which had no guardrail. One step from Nash, and she would jump. It was a threat with her own life as the wager. Nash froze immediately. His eyes were filled with tension as he watched her.
“Okay, I won’t come closer. Just don’t do anything rash!” Nash said.
Nina did not move from her spot. She looked at Nash and said, “As long as the baby is healthy, that’s all that matters. I won’t regret it.” The baby was her only hope and her unwavering belief.
She knew clearly that losing the baby would mean the end of her own life.
Everything would become meaningless.
