“The anesthesia wearing off will cause you some pain. Hang in there. It will get better in a couple of days,” Nina comforted her. Scarlett seemed relaxed. “It’s okay. Pain is no big deal for me. I’m just happy to see you again.”
Nina sat beside her, tightly holding her hand. “You’ll see me often from now on. Everything you’ve longed for will come true.” Scarlett nodded, feeling content. Even a small amount of attention and love made her happy.
“I want some water.”
Nina quickly got her some water. Scarlett drank it in a few gulps, feeling a lot better, her throat less sore.
“Do you want to rest some more?” Nina asked.
Scarlett shook her head. “No, I don’t want to sleep. I want to enjoy this moment of peace. Even if I’m lying in a hospital, at least I’m living like a normal person now.”
Without Sawyer’s control, she felt truly free for the first time. Having faced death, she now cherished life and wanted to live without regrets.
Noticing the guards outside, Scarlett asked, “Who are those people outside our room?”
“Soldiers,” Nina replied. “Don’t worry about them. Just focus on getting better.”
Scarlett understood immediately. “I get it. Since I was close to Sawyer, it’s normal for them to keep a close watch on me.”
Nina bit her lip, worried that Scarlett might be upset.
But Scarlett just laughed and said, “That soldier looks so serious and goofy. He’s kind of cute.”
Nina followed Scarlett’s gaze and realized she was talking about James, who was standing guard in a rigid military stance, not moving an inch. “That’s James. He works with Nash.”
“Ah, so Nash still has such a big goof around him,” Scarlett said with a chuckle.
Nina raised an eyebrow. To Scarlett, James’s serious demeanor seemed amusing, but if it made her happy, then this “big goof” had his value.
But Nina had more serious questions to ask.
“Scarlett, do you know about Miranda’s father?” Nina asked, hoping Scarlett might have information that James would not share.
Scarlett’s smile faded as she looked at Nina. “You mean Seth?”
“Seth?” Nina repeated. “Does he have a history with Sawyer?”
Scarlett explained, “No, there’s no personal grudge. They’re both under Pharaoh’s command. Seth likes experimenting, much like Pharaoh, while Sawyer is more about brute force. Now that Sawyer has betrayed them for his own gain, it has angered Seth. I suspect Nash and Seth worked together to take down Sawyer. Seth wouldn’t let a traitor go unpunished, especially since Sawyer holds something over him.”
“What kind of leverage?” Nina asked.
Scarlett hesitated. “I’m not sure. It wasn’t discussed openly, but it has something to do with Miranda. Whatever it is, it’s significant enough to threaten Seth’s safety. They all still fear Pharaoh.”
“Is Pharaoh really that terrifying?”
Scarlett nodded seriously. “Pharaoh is terrifying. No one dares defy him. Sawyer, blinded by greed, thought he could escape Pharaoh’s reach, but the end result? Death. I’ve never seen Pharaoh myself. He’s like a legend, a mysterious figure no one has ever met but everyone fears.”
“So, Seth and Nash teamed up to eliminate Sawyer. Seth works for Pharaoh, but Nash…” Nina pondered the situation, suddenly realizing something.
Her face paled. “Is Nash trying to get close to Seth because he’s Pharaoh’s trusted aide?”
