Finally, the house fell silent.
Nash looked at the scorched floor and said to Nina, “We shouldn’t stay here. I’ll take you somewhere more comfortable.”
“It’s fine,” Nina replied. “Only a small part is burned. We can fix it easily. There’s no need to go to all that trouble.”
Nash insisted, “As long as you’re comfortable, it’s no trouble.”
Nina declined, “Staying here is fine.”
Nash didn’t press the issue further and called someone to repair the burned areas. He also instructed the staff to tighten security measures. Everyone, including his relatives, would need to be strictly screened before seeing Nina. Everything was for her safety. After he had given all the necessary instructions, Nina asked, “Did you get Miranda released?”
Nash turned to her and replied, “Yes, why?”
Nina’s expression changed. “You know she’s connected to the organization. Why release her? It’s not fair to those who died!”
Nash continued in a soothing tone, “There’s no definitive evidence.”
Nina grew more agitated. “What counts as evidence? Do you need to see her kill someone with your own eyes? You know she and Seth are father and daughter, and she poisoned me. Isn’t that enough evidence? Must it be something you witness yourself?” Nash tried to calm her. “Don’t get too worked up. Think of the baby.”
He reached out to touch her belly, but Nina slapped his hand away. “You just can’t bear to see her suffer. It was the same in the past, and it’s the same now. What’s the difference? She’ll continue to harass me and disrupt my life! Today, your mother came here to burn the house down. Surely, she was behind it!”
“Do you have proof?” Nash retorted.
Nina looked at him, incredulous. “Isn’t this proof enough? As soon as her scandals are exposed, she sees me as her enemy and wants me dead. How can I let her keep harming me?”
“Why did you do it then?” Nash asked. “Are the reports true? If you don’t have proof, you could face legal trouble too.”
Nina’s eyes turned cold. “I am the proof. Why isn’t that enough? You’re just protecting her! You claim to love me, but deep down, you still care about her.”
“I don’t.”
“Really? Then why are you still protecting her and getting her released?” Nina raised her voice. “She should be rotting in jail. You released her, and now she’s causing trouble. If anything happens to me or the baby, it’s on you!”
“I said I don’t!” Nash shouted back, losing his temper.
Nina stared at him in shock.
Realizing his emotional outburst, Nash felt lost. He stepped forward and grabbed Nina’s hand, trying to explain. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have raised my voice.”
Nina, still angry, struggled to pull away.
“Ouch!” Nina cried out, feeling like her wrist might break. “You’re hurting me!”
