Nina pressed her lips together, noticing how much he had changed. The once dignified Nash, who used to have everything at the highest standard, was now eating this coarse rice in such harsh conditions.
She glanced at the bowl of white rice and said, “I’m not that delicate. I’ve gotten used to the life here in Yaren. You didn’t have to go out of your way to get white rice for me.”
Nash glanced at her. “There’s not much white rice left. Don’t waste it.”
Nina understood his point. She should cherish the food she had. Taking the bowl, she started eating large mouthfuls. It had been a while since she had hot rice, and she found it delicious, even without any side dishes.
Nash watched her cheeks puff out as she ate, a small smile tugging at his lips. He gestured to a nearby soldier, who promptly brought a cup of hot water.
“Have some vegetables too. Don’t choke,” Nash said to Nina.
She nodded, enjoying her meal. Despite the simple food, she thought it was the best she had ever tasted.
The soldiers around them were curious. They had never seen Nash so gentle with anyone. As they ate their meals, they whispered among themselves. “Who is that girl? Captain seems to know her. Did you see how gentle he was? Never seen him like that,” one soldier said.
Another nodded, “Yeah, I’ve never seen him like this. Who is she?”
“I have no idea. She asked if we were Captain’s unit, so they must know each other well.”

“Maybe Captain has a crush on her,” one speculated.
“With his height and looks, does Captain really need to have a secret crush? Maybe they’re a couple?”
“No way, no way. Look at how restrained Captain’s gaze is. If they were a couple, they’d be embracing by now. He’s definitely harboring a secret crush!”
