It was a reminder to never forget the past. Just then, Nash emerged and saw Nina talking with Carl. He noticed her gently patting Carl’s back, comforting him. They seemed to get along well, as if they had known each other for a long time. Nash’s expression darkened, his brows furrowing slightly. Nina, seeing Carl’s downcast demeanor, felt a protective, almost sisterly affection for him. She moved closer, offering her shoulder for him to lean on, hoping to instill some positive energy and a glimmer of hope. “Let’s work towards rebuilding our nation!” she said to him. Carl looked into her eyes, finding motivation in her determined gaze.
A sudden cough interrupted them. Carl quickly stood up, alert and cautious, as Nash approached.
“Sorry to interrupt,” Nash said in a deep voice.
“It’s okay,” Nina replied.
Carl remained wary. “Who is he?”
Nina introduced him, “This is Nash, Captain York, the leader who saved the village. You can call him Captain.”
Nash’s eyes bore into Carl. Carl seemed to understand. “You’re the protector they talked about.”
Nash shrugged off the title. “Not a protector, just a peacekeeping force.”
“You saved our village, which makes you our protector. We’re all very grateful to you. Our own government can’t even do that.” Carl was clearly disappointed in their government but full of admiration for Nash and his peacekeeping force.
Nash stepped closer, his voice cold but encouraging. “The future depends on young people like you. Survive, and there’s hope. Maybe one day your country will unite and prosper.”
Carl nodded.
Nina said to Carl, “Let’s go. It’s time to wash up and sleep.”
“Okay.”
Nash glanced at Nina. “Aren’t you sleeping in the tent? Where are you going?”
“I need to settle Carl first,” she replied.
Nash signaled to a soldier. “Get this kid settled.”
“Yes, Captain!” The soldier promptly approached.
Nina spoke to Carl, “Go with him. Rest well.”
“I will,” Carl said, looking at Nina. “I’ll remember your words and work towards rebuilding our nation!”
Nina and Nash’s words had given Carl newfound strength and direction.
Nina waved at him.
Carl took a few steps, then hesitated and came back. “Can I hug you?” Nina was momentarily surprised but then smiled warmly. “Of course.” Carl hugged her tightly. Behind them, Nash’s brows furrowed again.
“Thank you. I finally know what I need to do!” Carl said, his voice full of determination.
Nina felt a sense of relief. Her words had made a difference, giving him a sense of purpose.
“It’s my honor,” she replied.
Carl released her and walked away with resolve.

Nash stood beside her. “I’ve had some water heated for your bath,” he said.
