“Miss Nina.”
The call immediately snapped Nina out of her thoughts. She looked up instinctively to see a soldier standing at the door. “You’re looking for me?” she asked.
“Yes, the Yaren tribe sent over a large shipment of supplies, and they specifically requested that you sign for it.” “Alright.”
For the past five years, no matter where she was, the Yaren tribe had consistently arranged for large shipments of supplies to be sent her way. It was always someone else delivering them. Micah and the Pharaoh never appeared.
But every month, a large sum of money would be deposited into her account. The supplies helped the impoverished locals and improved the soldiers’ meals, so Nina had no reason to refuse. Plus, she did not have to see Micah or the Pharaoh. She patted Orion on the head. “I have to go out for a bit. Be good and don’t run off.”
Orion nodded.
Seeing how Orion preferred to remain silent, Nina’s heart felt heavy. If the embassy could not arrange for someone to help, she would contact Wilfred to have him come and take a look.
A child’s reluctance to speak could be a sign of autism, and he needed to see a doctor for proper treatment and intervention.
Nina followed the soldier to the supply reception area. As usual, she reached for the form to sign her name.
“Nina.” A gentle voice called out, and she looked up.
Standing not far away was Micah, dressed in a white shirt, smiling warmly. Five years had passed, and Micah was still the same. He was refined, cultured, and as composed as ever.
The control of the Yaren tribe was now entirely in Micah’s hands. The tribe had unified, establishing friendly relations with Birkham, bringing peace and prosperity. Nina was aware of all this, but she had never reached out to Micah or inquired about their situation. Now that Micah had come personally to deliver supplies, she knew he had something to discuss.
“Just say it. What do you need from me?” she asked, preempting him.
She quickly signed her name on the form and handed it to the soldier next to her. “Go ahead and check the supplies. This is a friend, and I need to talk to him. If anything comes up, just call me.” “Yes, Miss Nina.”
As the soldier moved to check the supplies, Nina walked towards Micah.
The moment she got closer, Micah’s eyes filled with a hint of sadness. “You look thinner and more tanned than before.”
Nina smiled. “Years of running around, it’s hard not to get thinner and more tanned.”
“Haven’t you had enough of being a war journalist?” Micah asked.
Nina’s ability to be a war journalist was due to two main reasons. The support and protection from the Pharaoh and Nash, and the fact that she was safeguarded from harm even in the midst of gunfire, thanks to the Pharaoh’s arrangements for her protection. For years, Micah had sent supplies, hoping to move Nina and make her realize his intentions. He never appeared in person, hoping she would reach out to him on her own. To his disappointment, Nina had never contacted him.
This time, he came to see how Nina felt after all these years. To his surprise, Nina did not show the emotions he had expected. In fact, she was very calm.
Nina pressed her lips together and said softly, “I love this job. If I can, I want to do it for the rest of my life.”
Being a war journalist was dangerous and rare. For Nina, it was a way to fulfill herself and help others. More importantly, it allowed her to feel closer to Nash, just as he had once been.
