“I know. I understand,” Nash replied gently. “But, Nina, our Orion has already been through so much. That tiny chance of something going wrong won’t happen to him. And trust in our father’s skill, okay?”
“Yes, Nina, and I’ll be there too, assisting Pharaoh.” Wilfred chimed in, trying to reassure her, though seeing them together pained him.
His priority, however, was Nina’s well-being. He would do everything in his power to ensure Orion’s surgery went smoothly.
Nina felt a wave of warmth in her eyes. From the time she was poisoned until now, Wilfred had been by her side. She was deeply touched. She gently released Nash’s hand. “I’d like to talk to Wilfred for a moment.”
“I’ll go check on Orion then,” Nash said, tenderly brushing a hand over Nina’s hair.
He had wanted to kiss her, but with Wilfred there, he understood the unspoken feelings Wilfred harbored.
Nash knew that he and Nina had a lifetime ahead for moments of intimacy, while Wilfred and Nina only had these brief conversations.
Kissing her in front of Wilfred would feel like staking a claim. Something he did not want to do to a friend.
After Nash left, Nina gave Wilfred a look, signaling for him to join her.
They walked side by side for a moment in silence before Nina quietly spoke. “Wilfred, thank you for being with me all this time. You’re a wonderful person, and I understand how you feel. I know it’s not my place to say this, and I don’t mean to sound self-centered, but I just want you to be happy. You have a long life ahead, and even Scarlett has found her own path. Surely, you’re not planning to spend your life alone, are you?”
Wilfred had not expected Nina to bring this up, intending to encourage him. His thought had always been that if he could not be with the one he loved, he would rather live alone. Being with someone else would only be a torment for him and unfair to them.
To ease Nina’s concern, he responded with a soft smile, “Of course, I won’t stay alone forever. I just haven’t met the right person yet. Don’t worry, when the time comes, you’ll be the first to know.”
Nina did not believe it for a second. If Wilfred truly had plans to be with someone else, it would not have taken this long. Especially after Nash’s death, when Wilfred had confessed his feelings for her. If it weren’t for her, why else would he have opened a clinic in Salterra? “If you don’t mind,” Nina continued, “once everything here is settled, how about I help you find someone? As your sister, okay?”
Nina was not worried about Wilfred affecting her. She was worried he might end up holding himself back because of her. They weren’t getting any younger, and life did not have room for endless delays.
Wilfred’s throat tightened at her words, as if a sharp blade had just pierced his heart. It left him feeling shattered, bleeding internally.
If he refused, it would seem he still harbored feelings for her. But if he agreed, Nina would really go through with it.
“Nina, I appreciate you thinking of me. I understand, but please respect my wishes. I’m not interested in blind dates,” Wilfred said slowly, with a tight smile.
He was not angry but he genuinely disliked the idea of arranged meetings.
