If his son were in the same situation, Caleb figured he would probably do what his father was doing now. Forget it.
“Fine,” he said at last. “You can stall my father for now. But let me be clear-whatever money you take from him, you’ll have to pay back later.”
He had no intention of having a child with Vera.
Vera readily agreed. “Alright. As long as I can clear my family’s debt, I’ll do whatever you ask.” “First, put your clothes back on.”
Caleb had encountered countless situations as a doctor. He had performed surgeries on both men and women without a second thought. But this was different. Vera wasn’t his patient.
Vera had already braced herself for the worst. Now that Caleb had set the terms, she quickly put her clothes back on.
But even after dressing, she remained on her knees.
Caleb hadn’t heard any movement, and since he didn’t want to turn around prematurely, he was caught off guard when Vera spoke. “I’m dressed.”
Only then did he turn to look at her.
He had no other thoughts in that moment-just the simple instinct that looking someone in the eye while speaking was a basic courtesy.
But what he didn’t expect was that Vera was still kneeling there on the floor. “What are you doing? Get up already,” Caleb said, his voice firm.
To his surprise, Vera lowered her head, her shoulders trembling. “I know what I did was terrible, but had no other choice. Caleb, thank you for helping me when I had nowhere else to turn.”
“There’s no point in saying this now.” Caleb cut her off, exasperated. “Just make sure to play along with
my father for now. And start looking for a real job as soon as possible=”
Before he could finish, Vera interrupted him.
“Caleb, as long as I can get the money to settle Mason Corporation’s debt, I can restart the business.
Once things are running again, I’ll pay everything back as soon as possible.”
Caleb narrowed his eyes at her. “You know how to manage a company? Negotiate deals?”
He had never interacted with Vera before and had no idea what she was capable of.
Vera nodded. know some things, but I’m not an expert. But right now, the only way I can pay you back is by rebuilding the company and making it profitable again. I mean it, Caleb-I’ll pay every cent back. I’l even write you an IOU.”
Her words carried a rare sincerity.
Caleb simply responded, “My father hasn’t even given you the full amount yet. What’s the point of writing an IOU now? Wait until you actually get the money.”
Vera hesitated before confessing, “But your father told me that he’d only give me the rest if I got pregnant with your child.”
Caleb smirked. “He already gave you
