Caleb had acted out of kindness, offering Vera a place to stay for the night since she had nowhere else to go.
He had assumed that after their conversation, she would let go of her ridiculous plan.
He truly never expected that Vera would see him as her last lifeline.
The more he thought about it, the angrier he became. “Vera, I finally understand why no one is willing to help the Mason family. There’s not a single decent person among you!”
Vera had anticipated Caleb’s anger, but she never thought he would lash out like this, dragging her entire family into it.
Say what he wanted about her-but how could he insult her family?
Frustration flared in her eyes. “I know what I’m doing is wrong. But I have no other choice. Caleb, you don’t have to take your anger out on my family.”
“If your family was so ‘good,’ then why did they leave you with mountains of debt? Why is your brother missing?” Caleb snapped, his voice sharp.
He hadn’t wanted to throw those words at her, but her actions had pushed him too far.
He had tried to help out of goodwill, yet Vera refused to give up, even going so far as to deliberately make their situation known to others.
Caleb had never been this furious before. Never had he ever wanted to physically throw someone out. Vera was trampling all over his kindness.
His words struck a deep wound, but Vera refused to believe her family had failed her. Her father had only taken risks to make the Mason family stronger. He never intended to leave behind so much debt.
As for her brother, he had always been responsible and protective. If he had disappeared, there had to be another reason.
“No. They had their reasons,” Vera said, her voice shaking. “Caleb, it’s already come to this. Listen-l took photos in your dorm and sent them to your father. He believes me. He just transferred me a million. He said if I can get pregnant with your child, he’ll clear my family’s entire debt.”
She wasn’t trying to be shameless. But Caleb’s father had made his offer too tempting. Backed into a corner, what choice did she have?
Vera’s eyes were bloodshot, brimming with unshed tears.
For the first time, Caleb faltered.
At the hospital, he had seen many desperate patients willing to do anything-people who got down on their knees, pleading for a loved one’s survival.
“You…” Caleb didn’t even know what to say anymore.
If he denied her claim now, his father would immediately question why she had been in his dorm, wearing his shirt.

His colleagues had already sent him teasing messages. If he cut ties now and Vera went looking for another wealthy man, what would that make him look like?
Before he could fully process it, Vera suddenly dropped to her knees and stripped in front of him.
Caleb turned his head sharply, refusing to look at her. “Vera, why does it have to be like this? Why? “Vera! You have other options. You could rely on yourself—”
His voice, initially filled with rage, faltered toward the end.
Could Vera truly rely on herself? If it were just a small amount, she probably could. But the debt she owed was astronomical. If it had been a manageable sum, his father would have helped already
His father’s demands had nothing to do with helping Vera.
With his reputation at stake, his father saw Vera’s situation as an opportunity. A woman like her, desperate and willing to do anything, had practically handed herself over. She could “fix” Caleb and give him an heir. It was an easy deal. Ä‚ practical transaction.
To his father, this was nothing more than a good business move.
