Freya truly loved Micah to the point where she was willing to become someone devoid of her own emotions just to be by his side.
But for Micah, that was precisely the reason he had hesitated to start anything with her. If he did, he would be fully committed, never just for the sake of it.
“Freya, you need to have your own identity. Your life is yours to live, not someone else’s. Even without me, you’ll find that there are other people out there worth loving.”
Micah’s words hit like a heavy weight in Freya’s throat. Even now, he was trying to guide her, to make her see reason.
“I’m not that bad! I’ve laid it all out for you, and you still won’t budge. I don’t want you to feel responsible for me. Just give me this one month, and you don’t have to think about anything else. Or do you really want to see me die right in front of you?” Freya’s voice cracked with desperation, and she seemed on the verge of breaking down completely. She did not care about losing herself if it meant being with Micah, no matter how much he pointed out the dangers of losing her identity. She was willing to give up everything, even be accused of lacking self-worth. As long as Micah agreed to her terms, she did not care. She would even die if that’s what it took.
But how could Micah let her die? The moment Freya took that bullet for him, he realized just how deep her commitment ran.
“Don’t die. If this month is all you ask for, then I’ll give you that month.”
“Really?” Freya’s eyes lit up, filled with a mix of disbelief and hope. She clung to Micah’s hand as if it were her lifeline.
For her, Micah’s agreement meant everything. It was a glimmer of hope, a chance that with enough effort, she could win his heart.
“Yes, but first, you need to rest and recover,” Micah said, gently patting her hand.
Freya nodded eagerly. “Okay.”
She released his hand, her spirits lifted like a child given a much-anticipated treat.
Micah, knowing how badly injured she was, dedicated himself to her care. He even went so far as to cook for her himself.
It was in the kitchen that Nina crossed paths with him. Noticing the bowl of chicken broth in his hand, she smiled. “So, have you and Freya made it official? Brother, you should cherish such a good woman.” Freya’s virtues were acknowledged not only by their father but also by Nina herself.
However, Micah knew that he and Nina could not both step back. With Nina planning to return to Birkham with Nash, the responsibility for their tribe naturally fell to him.
“I know she’s good. She saved my life so taking care of her is the least I can do. Beyond that, I’m not thinking about anything else right now.”
“Such a great woman right in front of you, and you don’t have any other thoughts? Are you sure you don’t like women?” Nina teased.
Micah stiffened slightly. If anyone else had said that, he might have been angry, but coming from Nina, it only brought a slight discomfort to his face. “Not liking women doesn’t mean I have to like men, does it?” He silently remarked, “Does everyone have to have romantic feelings in this life?”
Maybe it was the bond between them, or the experiences Nina had gathered over the years, but she had become adept at reading people. She caught something in Micah’s expression.
“Well, in this world, it’s either men or women,” she replied.
