Chapter 1053

After returning to Birkham, Scott had gone back to his family. Nina knew how he felt about her and remembered all he had done for her. Since then, she had only sent him a few messages but had never seen him again. Of course, Scott had never responded to any of those messages.
Nina’s simple question was like a sharp knife to him. How could he have been doing well?
When he returned to his family, they confiscated his phone. His time in the Yaren Tribe had left him broken, both physically and mentally. His freedom was restricted, and he was forced to recuperate. During that time, his family had arranged a wife for him, and now, he even had a child.
Scott had avoided contacting Nina all these years because he feared losing control. After all, he no longer felt worthy of standing by her side.
At this moment, it was as if an invisible hand tightened around his throat, making it impossible to speak. Nina could sense that something was wrong and wanted to say more when Nash approached.
Seeing Scott, Nash greeted him, “Scott, it’s been a long time.”
Scott had no choice but to respond, “Yes, it has been quite some time.”
Nina’s heart had always belonged to Nash, and now that he was alive and well, standing by her side, there was no chance she would leave him. Everything seemed predetermined.
Scott forced a smile and said, “I have some matters to attend to. I should be going.”
“Take care,” Nash replied, out of courtesy.
But Nina couldn’t shake the feeling that something was weighing on Scott’s mind.
Nash placed a comforting hand on Nina’s shoulder and said, “Everyone seems to be doing well now. You can finally let go of the past.”
Nina bit her lip and whispered, “Everyone may seem fine, but I don’t think Scott is okay.”
There was a distance between them now. But more than that, when she looked into Scott’s dark eyes, she saw a deep sadness.
Scott hadn’t responded to any of her messages, and while she had been busy as a war journalist, she hadn’t kept track of him. It felt like she had missed so much about his life. After a moment of hesitation, Nina decided to follow in the direction Scott had gone.
She caught up to him. “Scott, are you not using your phone number anymore?”
Scott nodded. “I changed it.”
No wonder he hadn’t replied. But then again, if he had changed his number, wouldn’t he have told her? And now, he seemed like someone who had gone through a major upheaval. Nina couldn’t hold back and asked, “Scott, why didn’t you tell me when you changed your contact information? Did… did something happen to you?”
She never expected Scott’s life to revolve around her, but they were friends. His lack of communication and the way he seemed now was anything but normal.
Scott let out a soft laugh. “I’m married now, with a child. I needed to draw clear boundaries with certain people and things from the past.”
He had no choice but to cut ties, even though a part of him wanted to give her his new contact information. But how could he, when they no longer stood on equal footing? Besides, Nash was by her side now.
As long as Nina was happy, that was the best outcome.
“I see. Well, as long as you’re okay, I’m relieved. I wish you all the best, Scott.”
Nina understood.
There was nothing more she could do but offer him her well wishes.
