After Yvette finished her rant, she finally got to the point.
Karina learned that Dr. Lincoln had transferred out, leaving a vacant spot for a new director at the hospital.
“So someone new is being transferred in,” she mused, absentmindedly nibbling on her pen. “I wonder who it could be.”
But even Yvette, the self-proclaimed hospital gossip queen who usually knew everything, was stumped this time.
“For once, I’ve got nothing,” she admitted, crossing her arms. “But I’ll bet you anything-they must have serious connections. Someone like that doesn’t just fly under the radar.”
Karina just shook her head. Gossip wasn’t really her thing. She usually listened and moved on without a second thought. This time was no different.
To her, it didn’t really matter who the new director was. After all, what were the odds it would be someone she knew?
She would soon find out just how wrong she was.
Not only did she know the new director, but she knew him very well.
On his first day, Karina was on her way to drop off some documents at the director’s office. She figured it wouldn’t hurt to take a peek at the mysterious newcomer-just to know what she was dealing with. The moment she opened the door, she froze.
“Wilfred?! What are you doing here?” she blurted out, her expression undoubtedly ridiculous.
To her shock, Wilfred laughed a full, genuine laugh that lit up his entire face, softening every trace of his usual seriousness. “Surprised? I was hoping this would be a nice surprise, but judging by that look, it’s more like a scare.” Karina almost clutched her chest. Her heart was racing like crazy.
“Of course, it’s a scare! You nearly gave me a heart attack!” she shot back. “Why are you here? What about your position in Birkham? Why would you suddenly transfer here?”
Everyone had been speculating about the new director’s impressive credentials and powerful connections, but Karina had no idea it was Wilfred.
If she had known, she would have tried to stop him.
While Atlantis hospital was excellent, it couldn’t compare to a Birkham hospital. It was like comparing a second-tier city to a first-tier one. Why would Wilfred willingly trade that for this?

Wilfred watched Karina, her worry so evident it seemed more intense than his own, her eyes glistening with concern. It left him feeling both touched and amused.
“This wasn’t a sudden decision,” he said, his voice calm but reassuring. “I’ve been thinking about it for a long time.”
Karina blurted out without hesitation, “But what about your future?”
Wilfred’s smile softened further. “It’s fine.”
Karina, however, wasn’t convinced.
Her frustration grew, and she felt like she was about to burst. She almost wanted to grab his shoulders and shake some sense into him. What make s was he thinking, gambling his career like this?
Noticing her growing agitation, Wilfred let out a resigned sigh. “Do you really think your director is that incompetent? It doesn’t matter. where go-I’ll be fine. Changing locations doesn’t mean I can’t do my
job.

The quiet confidence in his voice stunned Karina into silence. Her panic gradually subsided, though a trace of irritation lingered.
She was too busy fuming over his lack of warning to even notice the faintly meaningful way he had addressed himself as her director.
Wilfred, clearly enjoying her flustered reaction, teased, “Since I’m new here, shouldn’t you treat me to something nice?”
Karina paused to think, then asked, “Where are you staying? How about I come over and cook for you?”
