Seeing this, Karina finally let out a breath of relief. She walked over carefully, crouched beside the girl, and softly asked, “Are you okay?”
The girl’s body tensed at the sound of Karina’s voice. Slowly, she lifted her tear-streaked face, her red, swollen eyes resembling overripe peaches. Upon realizing it was Karina and Wilfred, she froze momentarily before turning her head away. Her voice was thick with sobs as she muttered, “Why are you here? Are you here to laugh at me?”
Karina quickly stepped closer, intending to comfort her, but before she could, the girl fixed her gaze on Wilfred.
Her emotions boiled over as she shouted hysterically, “Dr. Wilfred, can you just stay away from me? Seeing you makes me sick! I only want to talk to Karina alone. Leave! The farther, the better-don’t hover in front of me!”
Wilfred frowned slightly, his expression tinged with helplessness. Yet, seeing how distraught the girl was, he didn’t want to escalate the situation further. He glanced at Karina, silently reassuring her with his eyes, then turned and walked deeper into the park. His tall figure disappeared into the dense greenery, blending with the soft outlines of the distant trees until he was entirely out of sight.
The moment Wilfred was gone, the girl seemed to deflate like a punctured balloon. She wiped at her face with her hands, but her sobs continued to shake her shoulders uncontrollably.
Karina sat beside her quietly, pulling a handkerchief from her pocket and offering it with a gentle voice. “Here, wipe your face. Crying too much isn’t good for your health.”
The girl took the handkerchief and wiped her face. Sniffling, she turned to Karina, her gaze filled with a storm of emotions.
“Karina, tell me, what makes you better than me? From the moment I first saw him, my heart was full of him. So why can’t he see me?”
Karina sighed softly, her gaze earnest as she looked at the girl. “When it comes to feelings, there’s no rhyme or reason to it. It’s not about who’s better or worse. It just doesn’t work that way.
“Wilfred and I have been through a lot together. The struggles we’ve faced side by side brought us closer over time. It’s not a competition of who’s better. It’s a connection between two hearts. I can see that your feelings for him are genuine, but love isn’t something you can force.”
The girl bit her lip, silent for a long moment, until more tears streamed down her cheeks. “I know I can’t force it, but I just can’t control myself, Thinking about the two of you together-it’s like someone’s stabbing me in the heart.”
Karina gently patted her back. “I understand your pain. Letting go is incredibly hard. It feels like tearing out a piece of your soul. But if you keep focusing on that wound, it will never heal.
“Try doing something different. Find new hobbies, meet new people, and fill your life with vibrant colors. Over time, those bright moments will cover the gray pain.
“Someday, when you look back, you might realize your world is still full of light, even without him.”
The girl gripped Karina’s hand tightly, her palm clammy with sweat. Her voice trembled with desperation. “Do you really think that’s possible? That I can forget him?” Karina squeezed her hand firmly and said with conviction, “You can. As long as you take the first step.”
The girl’s eyes suddenly lit up, as though she had made a firm decision.
But in the next moment, her brows knitted tightly together, and she clutched her stomach with both hands.
A pained expression clouded her
face, and her voice weakened.
“Karina, I… my stomach hurts all of a sudden Maybe I got too worked up just now, and my old conditionis acting up. Can you take me to the clinic down the street?”
