Chapter 598
With a curious look, Judie fixed her gaze on Fernanda and asked pointedly, “So, who do you fancy?” Fernanda remained silent.
Martin sighed gently. “Why delve into her private life?”
“I just want to see who could possibly be better than my son,” Judie declared, then fell silent, leaving her question hanging in the air. A moment later, Judie’s face twisted into a complex expression, and she added, “It seems there are quite a few men better than him.”
Fernanda’s lips twitched in response.
“Many people know about your engagement, and they all expect you to marry my son,” Judie said, her eyes fixed on Fernanda. “So, in their eyes, you’ve cheated.”
“Really?” Fernanda countered, a note of disbelief in her voice. “Is it really fair to see it that way?”
“Yes.” Judie nodded firmly. “You broke the promise first, so my son no longer wants you; it’s not you who doesn’t want him.”
Fernanda replied with a subdued, “Alright then.”
No matter what Judie said, it was fine as long as she was content. Fernanda couldn’t quite grasp why these affluent ladies were so consumed by their pride.
Martin attempted to come to Fernanda’s defense. “Judie, that’s hardly fair. Fernanda is…”
Judie instantly frowned, shrugged off Martin’s hand, and raised her voice. “Our son was rejected, and you’re not defending him? What kind of father does that make you?”
Martin paused, then said quietly, “It’s not the first time he’s been rejected…”
This only fueled Judie’s anger further.
“I’ve heard he’s seeing that woman again!” she exclaimed, her tone heated. “He never listens. Hasn’t he learned anything from his past mistakes?”
Fernanda sensed that the woman Judie mentioned was Wendy.
It appeared that Judie was well aware of the ongoing dynamics between Wendy and Bobby, and she clearly held a grudge against Wendy, although Fernanda was unsure of the specific reasons. She had always sensed there was a history between Wendy and Bobby, but the details had remained elusive.
Now, it seemed, the story was more intricate than she had realized.
The conversation slowly wound down, leaving a quiet that settled over the living room.
Judie, arms crossed, sank deeper into the sofa, looking off to the side. Martin, smiling warmly, turned to Fernanda and shared, “To be honest, right from the start, I had a hunch we’d end up here.”
When Fernanda had vanished from their lives, Martin had spent countless hours imagining the paths she might have wandered down. Perhaps she’d become one of those forgotten kids, bailing on school early and scraping by on the fringes of society.
Or she might have been rushed into a marriage, just another face blurring into the masses.
On the brighter side, she could have been scooped up by a loving family, who nudged her through college doors and into a steady life.
He’d made peace with the thought that no matter Fernanda’s journey, he’d fold her into the Harper family’s embrace and fill her world with every comfort.
