As Cristian gently applied the bandage to the wound on Fernanda’s neck, her face contorted and her eyebrows knit into a tight frown.

“Don’t hold back—scream if you need to,” Cristian urged softly. “Your neck needs attention now. If it keeps bleeding, your condition could be much worse p>

“Just get on with it,” Fernanda replied through clenched teeth. Her resolve was ironclad. Though she made no complaints, the beads of cold sweat dotting her ashen forehead spoke volumes about the agony she endured.

Cristian marveled at her stoicism. Such resilience was rare, and his heart swelled with both admiration and concern. Once the neck wound was securely dressed and the bleeding had ceased, he gave her a brief examination.

“Nothing too serious elsewhere, except for your ankle,” he informed her. “It’s dislocated. We need to get you to a hospital to address it properly p>

Dislocations were nothing new to him, especially after outdoor mishaps, yet the thought of resetting her joint filled him with dread. He decided to let Fernanda rest briefly, allowing her to gather strength for what was to come.

Fernanda propped herself up delicately, grimacing as she surveyed her ankle. It was alarmingly red and swollen, and even the slightest movement sent stabs of pain coursing through her.

Cristian settled on the cool earth nearby and opened the GPS locator. “The race must be over by now. I’ll get someone to come for us,” he said, concern furrowing his brow. The slope before them looked daunting, especially given Fernanda’s condition. He considered carrying her but feared jostling her ankle and making the injury worse. Determined to avoid further harm, he activated the locator, pinpointed their exact position, and sent the coordinates to the rescue team. Then he called the team leader, his voice firm and urgent. “Get a team to these coordinates, stat. Bring a stretcher and extra hands—there’s been a minor accident, and the motorcycle went over the edge p>

He stood proudly on the podium, clutching his flowers and medal, his eyes searching the crowd for familiar faces. He had wanted nothing more than for Cristian and his angel to witness his triumph. Yet neither appeared, and his excitement turned to agitation. What could have taken them away? Were they on a date? A mix of confusion and concern swirled in his mind. “What?” Bobby’s eyes nearly popped out of his skull in shock. “Are you serious p>

“I wouldn’t joke about something as grave as this,” the organizer replied, his face etched with concern. “We’re putting together a rescue team as we speak. Let’s just hope he’s alright p>

Bobby’s voice boomed, “Then why are you still standing here? Move!” He threw his helmet, bouquet, and medal to the ground, ready to spring into the rescue vehicle.

Ava hurried over, seizing his arm. “Where do you think you’re going?” she demanded.

“Leave me be, Ava,” Bobby snapped, shaking off her grip.

“But this is the awards ceremony! You’re one of the honorees—the highlight of the event. You can’t just walk out!” Ava protested. She had cheered Bobby on at every competition and felt an overwhelming sense of pride in his success. Yet she never anticipated he would bolt so suddenly.

“My cousin got into a serious accident. I don’t have time for celebrations,” Bobby muttered, his voice sharp as he walked away.

Ava’s hand flew to her mouth, her eyes wide with shock. How could Cristian have been the one in the accident? She had only tampered with Fernanda’s motorcycle by loosening a screw, not Cristian’s.

“Is Cristian okay?” she asked, her voice tinged with urgency.

Bobby raked his fingers through his hair, visibly agitated. “How am I supposed to know? That’s exactly why I’m heading there now!” His tone was laced with frustration and concern. He couldn’t fathom how an accident had occurred. Motorcycle racing carried inherent risks, but a simple tumble was one thing—crashing down the slope was entirely different. The incline in question was notoriously steep, and racers often reached breakneck speeds. If Cristian had indeed fallen there, the aftermath could be grim.

A woman’s voice? Dread washed over Bobby, a sinking feeling in his gut. It had to be his angel. Was it his angel, not Cristian, who had been in the accident? Memories flashed through his mind of how his cousin had rushed to the race’s starting line. Had he sensed something was wrong back then?

“Let’s keep moving—come on,” Bobby said urgently. “We need to get there fast p>

Ava stood frozen, shock etching her features. Could it really be Fernanda who was in the accident? How could it be? She had only rigged Fernanda’s bike to slow her down, not to endanger her life. How on earth did Fernanda end up tumbling down the slope? Fear gripped Ava as a gnawing sense of dread took hold. Something was terribly wrong.
