Chapter 661
Sloane agreed immediately, and they all headed to the police station. Unfortunately, the investigation into the license plate turned up nothing; it was a dead end.
With a heavy sigh, Bonita’s fleeting hope was extinguished once again. The officers offered their assurances, committing to push forward with the investigation and hoping to catch the culprit soon. With a nod, they encouraged Fernanda and her group to head home.
Despite the lack of tangible progress, Bonita felt no resentment towards the polite officers. She understood the difficulties they faced every day and knew that societal problems needed to be solved step by step.
As they exited the police station, an unexplained shiver ran through Bonita.
“Could it be that he was there for another reason?” Bonita murmured.
“Was he possibly after me?”
“Are you suggesting he was tailing you?” Sloane frowned. “Human traffickers don’t just target one person; that’s not how they operate.”
“What if he did, though?”
“No chance. Our campus is always swarming with activity and is well-guarded. He’d be too scared to try anything there,” Sloane reassured Bonita. “He probably came there for someone else and accidentally ran into you. That’s why he bolted when he saw you. It’s clear he’s intimidated by you.”
Bonita’s tension eased slightly, reassured by Sloane’s reasoning.
When Fernanda got back to her dorm, she was surprised to find Wendy had already returned.
Wendy had been away on an international project with her mentor and wasn’t expected back for weeks.
She shared that the project wrapped up sooner than planned and she was just stopping by to gather some essentials for upcoming local assignments.
True to her word, Wendy left quietly the following morning.
Later that day, after a morning lecture, Fernanda’s phone rang. It was Cristian.
“I’m outside your campus,” Cristian said over the phone. “How about we grab some lunch together?”
Exiting the campus, Fernanda caught sight of Cristian’s car parked nearby.
After she got in, Cristian greeted her with a beaming smile.
“It feels like it’s been ages since we last met,” Fernanda remarked, clicking her seatbelt into place.
“Exactly fifty-three days,” Cristian said with a nod. “I’ve been swamped with work, but I’ll be more available soon.”
“Have you visited Litdence again recently?” Fernanda inquired.
Cristian nodded. “Yes, I was there.”
Choosing not to ask further, Fernanda remained silent.
Together, they selected a nice restaurant they hadn’t tried before. Their conversation flowed easily as they discussed recent happenings, both seeming quite comfortable.
