Sandy always knew her mom couldn’t stand Mrs. Smith, but she never realized just how deep that hate ran. Still, you had to admit, the old lady could be impossible. How on earth was getting Miracle Hands to do Luke’s surgery tied up with apologizing to Lydia? Seriously, did Grandma really think her own grandson mattered less than some outsider?
And Lydia, that smug little snake, had spent eighteen years living the high life-a life that should have been Sandy’s. Now she still had the nerve to act all high and mighty? Sandy could still feel the sting of last night’s humiliation. One day, she swore, she would return it all, double or even ten times over.
“Mom, have some water. Grandma raised Lydia herself, so of course she’s a little biased,” Sandy said, trying to sound reasonable.
Milana scoffed. “That old bitch. Once Luke’s surgery is over, I’ll make sure she pays. She thinks she can boss me around just because she’s old? She’s practically halfway gone, but still acts like she owns the place.”
She was furious, but she kept calling anyway. No matter how much she raged, she couldn’t let anything jeopardize her son’s operation. Luke needed help, and nothing was more important than that.
The phone kept ringing and ringing until Lydia finally picked up, sounding annoyed. “Who is this?”
Milana actually felt a little relieved to hear Lydia’s voice, but that relief lasted about a second before she snapped. “Lydia, why did you block our numbers? Why won’t you pick up when I call? Do you know what time it is? Or are you still tangled up in some random man’s bed?”
She was so angry she forgot what she’d even been calling about.
Lydia’s voice went cold. “You’re crazy.” Then she hung up and blocked the number. So all these unknown calls must have been from Milana. How annoying.
Milana was fuming. “That little bitch! She called me crazy and blocked me again!” She stared at her phone, completely bewildered.
Sandy tried to help. “Mom, she hasn’t blocked my number yet. Want me to call her for you?”
Milana nearly rolled her eyes out of her head. “Go ahead. But if she doesn’t answer this time, I am done trying. I’m not apologizing anymore, I swear.”
She lifted her chin, acting like Lydia should be grateful for their apology. But even when Sandy called, Lydia didn’t answer, as if she knew exactly what was going on and refused to play along.
Sandy realized this wasn’t working, so she suggested, “Mom, maybe you should text her. Try being nice. If she ignores you. We can take a Screenshot and show Grandma. That way, Grandma will see we really tried to apologize, but Lydia is the one refusing to talk op meet up.”
