Officer Byrne’s heart skipped a beat. “The whole city?”
“Every police department in all eighteen districts is streaming this absurd interrogation as we speak. It’s already causing a huge stir. Get over there now. Detain every single officer on duty in the Fifth Division and find out exactly what’s going on. I want answers.”
Officer Byrne nodded immediately. “Yes, sir. I’m on my way.”
Back at the Fifth Division’s interrogation room, Corbyn kept pushing, trying to break Lydia down with threats and intimidation.
“Listen, kid. I’m warning you for your own good. Think carefully about what you do next. If you don’t, you’re not the only one who’s going to get hurt.” ᴜᴘᴅᴀᴛᴇ ꜰʀᴏᴍ.net
Lydia looked up, meeting his eyes. “You’re the one making the decisions here?”
Corbyn let out a short laugh. “I’m the one questioning you, so yeah, I decide what happens.”
“But isn’t the chief the one in charge? Are you the chief?” Lydia’s tone was skeptical, almost teasing.
Corbyn bristled, feeling like she was mocking him, and decided to set her straight. “The chief’s at the top. Then there’s the deputy chief, and after that, it’s me. Got it?” He was basically saying he held her fate in his hands, so she’d better not
underestimate him.
Lydia looked genuinely surprised. “So you’re third in command?”
Corbyn grunted. “If you know what’s good for you, you’ll just sign the papers. It’s your best option.”
“So you’re forcing me to sign. Did your bosses approve this, or are you just doing it on your own? Aren’t you worried I’ll report you?”
Corbyn had no idea she was leading him right into a trap. He just smiled smugly, thinking he had everything under control. “You’re going to report me? Don’t kid yourself. You only have yourself to blame for crossing the wrong people.”
“You mean Louise? What’s she to you?”
“Why do you have so many
questions?” Corbyn was getting
annoyed. In his mind, Lydia was
already caught. Hed handled
situations like this before, and it was
just business as usual.
“You want me to confess. I deserve to know who I’m supposed to be so afraid of.”
Corbyn decided he might as well tell her, since she was already in trouble. “Miss Stein is Deputy Chief Reeves’ niece. You put her in the hospital 06 you really think he’s going to let you walk free?”
Lydia’s face lit up with fake realization. “So she’s Deputy Chief Reeves’s niece?”
“Now you get it? You see who you messed with? Just sign the papers and stop
wasting time. I have to report back.”
“Report back to Deputy Chief Reeves?”
“Who else?”
Lydia fell quiet.
Corbyn watched her lower her head, thinking she’d finally given up. He thought she’d accepted the truth.
“Just sign it, kid. If you apologize to Miss Stein and she’s satisfied, maybe you’ll get a lighter sentence.”
Suddenly, Lydia snapped her head up, her voice cold and fierce. “I need to see your chief. I want him to hear my side and give me justice.”
Corbyn was thrown off. He’d laid everything out for her, but she still wouldn’t back down.
All around the city, people stared at their screens, holding their breath, waiting to see what would happen next. From their point of view, the camera was on Lydia, and it was really Corbyn who was exposed, caught in the spotlight. Lydia had been setting a trap since the start, and he’d walked right into it, dragging his boss along with him.
