Chris just stared, lost for words.
Grandpa Samuel didn’t care one bit if Chris felt a little wounded. In his world, being single meant you basically didn’t count. He kept scrolling through the photo on his phone, each glance making him happier and happier. He really wanted to share this good news with someone who would get it, but his wife wasn’t around anymore. If she were, she’d be just as thrilled to see their oldest grandson finally paired up.
So, with a sigh, he did the next best thing. He sent the photo to his old friend, adding, “Carson, I finally have a granddaughter-in-law, hahaha!”
Aiden had taken the shot at just the right moment. The streetlights looked soft and dreamy. Underneath, a young couple stood hugging, faces turned just enough to catch their profiles. The whole scene felt straight out of a storybook.
Samuel had always worried that his grandson was too stiff, too cold, never the type to charm a girl or make her smile. Now, looking at this, maybe things weren’t so hopeless after all.
What Samuel didn’t know was that as soon as Carson got the photo, a certain group chat basically exploded.
Lydia had just sat down with everyone for dinner when her phone started ringing nonstop, like it had caught some kind of virus. The whole table looked her way. She smiled, switched the phone to silent, and checked her messages. It was blowing up in her “Retirement Crew” group chat.
Carson tagged everyone: [Guys, check this out. Is that our Lydia?]
The picture of the hug popped up, and the group chat went wild.
Charles said, [Oh my goodness! Is that really our Lydia?]
Kevin replied, [I put on my reading glasses and checked at least ten times. That has to be her!]
Finn chimed in, [Who’s this punk trying to steal our flower? I’ll deal with him myself!]

Patrick said, [Isn’t that the Jefferson kid? What’s he doing with our Lydia?]

Patrick added, [Lydia is so sweet and innocent. We can’t let her get fooled by this guy!]
Charles said, [Honestly, I think Lydia and that kid make a cute pair. If she likes him, we should just snatch him away and have him break off his engagement with the Norwoods.]
Finn objected, [I’m not on board. Lydia’s so young. That Jefferson kid is way too old for her. There’s a whole generation between them!]
There were twelve people in the group, counting Lydia. The ones online were firing off messages so fast, the unread count shot past 99 in no time.
Lydia just had to admire their
energy. She scrolled to the top of the chat and looked at the photo, then sighed and glanced at Connor, who was sitting right next to her. It was a shot of her and Connor in front of her house, just a little while ago.
Who even took that photo? And how did it end up in her group chat?
Noticing the way she was looking at him, Connor leaned in and asked quietly, “What’s up?”
Lydia hesitated, then forwarded the photo to him.
Connor looked at his phone and froze.
