Monica and Fiona introduced themselves to Daisy right away. Monica was from the Capital too, her family was pretty well-off, but nothing compared to the Rivers
family’s old money and connections. Fiona came from a wealthy family in a coastal city. Her relatives had wanted her to stay local for college, but she had her heart set on Capital Med School. It really was true, the Capital drew in all the brightest people. On her first day, she was already sharing a room with the famous Daisy.
Daisy glanced out toward the balcony and asked, “What about her? What’s her name? Where’s she from?”
Monica shook her head. “We just got here ourselves. Haven’t even had a chance to say hi.”
Fiona nodded. “Yeah, but she’s really gorgeous. Honestly, the prettiest girl I’ve ever seen.”
Monica chimed in, “Totally. I think she’s even prettier than a movie star.”
Daisy didn’t like that at all. She’d always been the prettiest and the most talented girl everyone talked about, ever since she was a kid. Now, hearing Monica and Fiona gush about someone else right in front of her made her feel more than a little annoyed. She’d only caught a glimpse of Lydia’s side profile earlier, so she was determined to see for herself how pretty this girl really was. Could she really be prettier than her?
Lydia didn’t seem to care what they were saying. She stepped out onto the balcony and answered her phone.
Connor’s deep, smooth voice came through. “You get to school okay?”
Lydia nodded. “Yeah.”
“Did you get everything unpacked?”
“I’m working on it.”
“I’ll pick you up for dinner tonight.”
Lydia raised her eyebrows. “Dinner? I have to go to the lab tonight.”
She’d already promised to meet Grandpa Kevin at the lab at eight.
Connor sounded disappointed. “You wouldn’t let me drive you to school, and now you don’t even have time for dinner?”
“Maybe another day.”
Connor let out a sigh. “Alright. I’m flying overseas tomorrow morning. I’ll be gone for a week.”
Lydia paused for a second. “Don’t forget to use your medicine.”
“Will you miss me?” Connor asked, sounding a little full of himself.
For the past two months, he’d pretty much stuck by Lydia’s side every day. He’d put off business trips whenever he could, or sent other his place, but sometimes

Lydia let out a quiet laugh. “Are you free for lunch? My treat. If you’re busy, it’s fine.”
Connor perked up instantly. “If you are inviting me, I’ll definitely make time.”
Meanwhile, Lucinda was arriving at her own school. Capital College campus was more than twice as big as Capital Med School, which was why people couldn’t understand why Lydia, the country’s top student, would pick the med school over the more prestigious college
Lucinda showed up with at least ten suitcases and a whole entourage of bodyguards. Her arrival turned everyone’s head.
“Wow, who is that? That’s some entrance.”
“No idea, but her family must be super rich to have all those people with her.”
“She has five times as much luggage as I do.”
“She’s got bodyguards bringing her to school. I don’t even have one.”
