Lucinda smoothly shifted the topic to Daisy, and everyone around nodded as if it made perfect sense. After all, Capital College had Daisy, their medical prodigy. Why should they worry about some rookies from Capital Med School?
Only Lucinda knew the truth. Lydia was just as talented as Daisy. She brought up Daisy’s name just to keep everyone’s complaints away from herself. Lately, all anyone could talk about was how Daisy was going to wipe the floor with Lydia at the academic competition, utterly humiliating her. Lucinda just needed to sit back and enjoy the drama.

When Daisy transferred to Capital College, she conveniently left out the part where she and her grandfather had been kicked out of the International Medical Association. For the past month, her grandfather had been frantic, pulling every string he could, reapplying again and again, but nothing worked. He was absolutely fuming.
Lydia might have her beat in military training, but when it came to medicine, she was going to make Lydia beg for mercy. And she had even prepared a special surprise just for her. The thought alone made her heart race.
Tomorrow, she would return every bit of embarrassment Lydia had caused her. Ten times over. A hundred times over.
With that in mind, Daisy couldn’t hide her smugness. She lifted her chin, though she kept her tone humble. “Don’t give me too much credit. There are so many talented people now. I can’t say for sure I’ll win first place tomorrow. But I promise I’ll give it my all and do my best to bring home some glory for our medical department.”
Later that afternoon, just before school let out, Lucinda called Garrett and hoped he’d come pick her up. But he didn’t answer. By the time he did see her call, he and Lydia were already home.
“Lucinda, I’m sorry. My phone was on silent and I missed your call,” Garrett explained, sounding tired. After his last class, he’d just wanted to go home with Lydia and catch up on some sleep.

I’ll ask the driver to come get you.”
He figured Caspian would take care of it.
Lucinda felt like she might actually explode. Why? Their schools were practically next door. Why couldn’t he just pick her up on the way home? He always used to wait f her after class so they could go home together. It was all Lydia’s fault.
Her voice trembled with disappointment. “Okay, Garrett. Just have the driver come get me.”
Garrett nodded. “Alright.”
Inside the house, Kylie and Cameron heard the sound of voices outside and rushed out like a tornado. The moment Kylie saw her daughter, she ran over and pulled Lydia into a tight hug.
“Lydia, you’re finally back. I missed you so much,” Kylie said, barely holding back tears.
Cameron wasn’t about to be left out. “Hey, don’t forget me. I missed you too.”
Mr. Norwood hobbled out with his cane, his eyes softening as he looked at Lydia.
“And me. Lydia, you’ve gotten so thin. What happened?”
It was only then that Kylie and Cameron noticed just how much weight Lydia had lost. Their hearts ached at the sight.
